Will Obama's Presence Mean More Work for Black Models?

The Black Snob has a clip of a CNN story purporting that Barack Obama's presidency could signal increased opportunities for black models in editorials, ad campaigns, and on runways:

In the video David Rogers, a Global Brand Expert, says, "Marketers are finally waking up to it, ya know Black is Beautiful. It's just gonna become part of the fabric of the fashion imagery of pop culture. Which is a great thing."
Hmm...Do you think having Barack in office will significantly diversify the exclusive fashion industry? Or will it continue to be a world where Black is Invisible?

House of Style Returning to MTV

Page Six reports that MTV's House of Style is making a comeback!
They say, "The popular '90s show about fashion and design, which helped make a household name of original host Cindy Crawford, is being revived."
Rumors are also swirling that our fave camera girl Chanel Iman is in contention for the top host spot.
Based on Chanel Iman TV, will you be tuning in to the new and improved House of Style?
For those of you too young to remember the show, a clip:

The music was good...I'm kind of excited!
PS Did anyone else notice that the Herve Leger dress Linda Evangelista wore on the runway in the 90's was almost identical to the one Lindsay Lohan wore to Maxim's Sexiest Awards (in May 2007)?
Everything comes back at some point!

Venus and Serena win Doubles Grand Slam at Australian Open

I was watching TV while on the treadmill today and saw that my mother's favorites, Venus and Serena Williams, won the doubles Grand Slam at the Australian Open:
Source
...watching those girls when I work out makes me just want to run faster and jump higher...they're the bomb!
Congrats ladies!

Mail Bombs: Beyonce's Grey Pumps, Gabrielle's Reem Acra Gown, and Victoria Beckham's Posh Look!

It's Friday!
Let's do what we do best!
First Marchelle says, "I was wondering if you can tell me who designed the grey platforms Beyonce's wearing here..."
"...I would so loooove to get my hands on them!"
Adriana says, "Beyonce's rocking a version of these suede Casadei heels with a crocodile skin-covered platform, part of Casadei's Crocodile Shock collection from Fall/Winter 08-09:"
"...Visit www.cassadei.com for store locations."
Next, Camille says, "Could you help me find the name of the designer of the black dress Gabrielle Union wore to the BET Honors?"
"...Luv it!"
Gabby's wearing the black version of this Reem Acra Pre Fall 2009 gown...
Get a similar look with this $250 ABS Allen Schwartz Black Jersey One Shouldered Gown:
...from www.bluefly.com.
Anne says, "I really need your help replicating this outfit worn by Victoria Beckham..."
"...The skirt doesn't necessarily have to be leather, I just want it to be the same color. Thanks so much!"
Adriana says, "Here's how to get the look of the may-jah one herself:"

1. Marc Jacobs Brown Square Sunglasses, $98. 2. Banana Republic Stretch Cotton Blouse, $59. 3. Steve Madden Dionne Sandal, $113. 4. Linea Pelle Women's Leather Belt, $113. 5. Charlotte Russe Twill Salmon Skirt, $23.
And in a male mail bomb, Cornelius says, "I try extremely hard to be as diverse as possible--I would rather stand out than blend in with the crowd! Can you help me find this thing that Chris Brown has around his neck?"
"...I'm not sure what it's called but I think it's awesome."
Hmmm, looks like Chris is wearing a Snood, an accessory that is both a scarf and a hood. If you want to spend, Barney's has this Elder Stateman version for $1,138:
If that's too much, try this Fair Isle Knit Snood for $15 from Urban Outfitters:
Good luck!
Now for wardrobe queries!
Cynthia says, "Are sequined outfits going out of style? I saw this cute sequined skirt..."
"...and was wondering what it could be worn with? Would you suggest that I buy it (or will it be out of style?)"
Cynthia, sequins *never* go out of style. They're the go to outfit adornment for any high wattage event:

For your skirt, I'd say let it shine on its own, and balance out the sparkle with a low key black jacket or blazer with an eye catching clutch (go for a saucy tux aura):

Left to Right: Guess Diamond Blazer, $90. Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Waistcoat, $69. Forever 21 Glitter Clutch, $17.

Lastly, Lisandra says, "I'm a 21-year-old college student and I am looking to put a few pairs of cute sneakers in my wardrobe. Something cute but still affordable, I don't want to spend more than $100 unless they are just super cute. Please help me step my sneaker game up!"
Sure. Try these affordable options:

1. Creative Recreation 'Cesario Lo' Sneaker, $80. 2. Converse Silver Sneaker, $67. 3. Alexander McQueen Puma Shoes, $92. 4. Puma Mostro Perf Sneaker, $100. 5. Diesel Women's Live Rush Sneaker, $40. 6. Adidas Adi Hoop Mid, $50. 7. Nike Track Racer Women's Shoe, $75. 8. Creative Recreation 'Dicoco' Sneaker, $100.
Pssst, check out this vintage FB post on cute, fashionable sneakers (I wrote it right after I had foot surgery!)
That does it for today:)
Have fabulous weekends! Countdown to Fashion Week begins today!
Bisous!

Hot! or Hmm..:John Legend

Hey Fashion Bombers!
Vuitton here with a men's edition of Hot or Hmm featuring John Legend!
The crooner was spotted with his girlfriend, Christine, at a pre-inaugural party hosted by Tropicana in this interesting jacket.

I'm all about fashion forward looks, but something about his jacket makes me go hmmm... What do you guys think?

More on Matthew Williamson for H&M

We're about to see a whole lot more of one of our favorite designers! WWD reports that not only will Matthew Williamson be designing a line for H&M: he'll also be starring in its ad campaign with Canadian supermodel Daria Werbowy.

In what's being touted as his "modeling debut," Williamson will appear in both print and TV ads. I normally love when designers do this, provided they don't take it to the hilt the way St. John did for years with Marie Gray and then Kelly Gray, her daughter.

Are you even more excited for this line? I am! Can't wait to see the madness that ensues...

Style Crutch? Toccara

I recently happened upon this picture of bomb beauty Toccara...
...and had a nagging feeling I had seen that dress before!
Digging a little deeper, I realized that Toccara hadn't worn that specific dress, but relied on a similar silhouette for a few red carpet events...

...Fitted bust, knee length skirt with a bit of flutter.
Everyone has a style crutch, a silhouette to which they are always drawn. I personally have a thing for strapless dresses; no matter the length or the color, I have to have it! But then I stop myself....too predictable!
What's your style crutch?

Spring '09 Couture Collections: Paris

Hey bombshells, it's Adri here with a roundup of the Spring '09 Couture collections in Paris!

THE FASHION BOMB'S
SPRING '09 COUTURE ROUND-UP

Over the past week, the few designers who continue to offer made-to-wear fashions displayed their goods for the stylish and well-heeled. Couture, which can cost upwards of $20,000 per outfit, is a luxury most can't afford.
So why do some fashion houses keep doing it? Apart from the fact that several do have loyal couture customers, it also serves as image reinforcement, especially for brand extensions. In plain English: Can't afford that Givenchy dress you crave? Buy a Givenchy perfume, instead!
OK, let's get to it!

ELIE SAAB: One of Beyoncé's favorite designers for red carpet wear, Saab sticks to his tried-and-truly feminine silk/chiffon/beaded concoctions. The pastel colors are an obvious nod to spring and, while a bit predictable, there's no denying the innate elegant prettiness of the pieces.

MARTIN MARGIELA: Margiela showed only ten looks in his couture collection, which made each piece distinct and memorable. I love the nude bodysuit overlaid with sequin appliqués (bottom row, far left), which I can easily see on Rihanna, a self-proclaimed fan of the house.

GIVENCHY: My favorite of the group: thoroughly modern and quietly sexy. The colors are muted but still rich somehow, and the shapes make you want to throw on a pair of heels and head out to a chic cocktail party or front row of a fashion show!

CHRISTIAN DIOR: Theatric and a bit confusing, I can't muster too much enthusiasm for these overdone pieces. While some of them are gorgeous and works of art more than anything else, the collection as a whole feels like it's trying a bit too hard. The off-shoulder white gown in the top row is major, though.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: The models's hair is reminiscent of the '20s but the clothes are almost anything but. Instead, the '80s ruled, with broad shoulders, cinched waists, and the Gaultier fondness for corsets evident throughout the collection. I liked. Kind of.

CHANEL:Karl Lagerfeld played with a limited color palette (whites, creams, blacks) and a treasure trove of textures, details, and tailoring. It's a beautiful collection, and exactly what couture ought to be: luxurious, unique, and forward-thinking!

ARMANI PRIVÉ:The Far East is clearly an influence here, and Giorgio Armani focuses on an Armani signature: the jacket. Although I'm not wild about the pants, the red tassels on the grey shark-skin suit (bottom row, center) give it a perfect pop of color, and the skirt-jacket combos would be my choice if I was a lady who lunched!

What did you guys love?

PS Pretty sure she's rocking Jenny Dayco earrings.

Beauty Bomb: Neutrogena Advanced Solutions

Hey Fashion Bombers!
Vuitton here with a beauty product alert for everyone!
The only thing worse than getting a pimple are the spots left behind afterwards. So while scouring the net for something to use, I came upon this product...
...Neutrogena's Advanced Solutions Acne Mark Fading Peel. I read reviews, and just about everyone seemed to have great things to say about it. I got it, and despite it being over-the-counter, it actually works! But the key is to be consistent. Use as directed, and you'll see improvements.... I saw results within a week! It's about $25 at drugstore.com, and about $20 in Zeller's for my Canadians. For reviews on this product, click here.
Keep it fab!

My Favorite Things: Nina Sky

Hey Fashion Bombers!
Adriana here!
I recently had a chance to catch up with the girls from Nina Sky to chitchat about their style evolution, favorite fashionable things, and which trends they think are tired and need to be fired!

Not familiar? The ladies of NINA SKY (Natalie (above, left) and Nicole (right)) took the music scene by storm in 2004 with their breakout hit "Move Ya Body." Lately, they've been working on their second album, "THE MUSICAL," dabbling in clothing and sneaker design, and developing a distinct, edgy-chic style that's thrust them squarely into the fashion spotlight.
Nicole shares, "Natalie and I were 18 and straight out of high school when we debuted. Our style reflected that: we didn't wear makeup and probably owned 2 pairs of heels between us both--it was strictly FLY kicks and comfort all dayyyyy! We've grown a lot, and have developed a broader taste for clothing. It's a natural progression; over the years, you just begin to like different things and experiment more. " Too true for all of us...For Natalie, "It's NEVER about what designer I'm wearing: I don't really follow 'what's in' so I rock what I think is hot. I love to mix designer pieces with vintage and other stuff I find at spots like Forever 21." Adds Nicole, "Even when we work with stylists, it's a collaboration. Everything we do has to reflect us as individuals as well as the group NINA SKY." I think that's the ideal stylist-client relationship, don't you?As for style icons, the ladies cite Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Gwen Stefani as some of their favorites (Natalie: "They own that ish!"). Designer-wise, Nicole's a fan of Boy by Band of Outsiders and Chanel shoes, while Natalie's an admitted Alexander Wang and Matthew Williamson lover who prefers Betsey Johnson and Louboutins on her feet.Like yours truly, though, these divas are still devoted sneaker heads, and have now formed a cool partnership with FILA. "If you know about NINA SKY, then you're familiar with our sneaker collection," says Nicole. "FILA was launching a young women's line and wanted to use artists that made sense to market the shoe. Our next step: design a sneaker with them!" I think they have what it takes to create something dope! Natalie has also designed for a young women's line, MADEME, and a hair salon, cookbook, and acting are also in the works for both. Now, about those tired trends...ladies, in your opinion, what are people wearing way too much of these days? Natalie: "Keffiyeh scarves!" Nicole: "Headbands!" And what are some of your favorite things from your own personal closet? Natalie: "I love necklaces with gun charms. I have a Cubannie Links Tupac Rosary and an AK-47 Complete Technique chain that I take turns rockin' daily." Nicole: "It changes every season but RIGHT NOW it's this coyote fur trooper hat I bought in Luxembourg." Jet-setter style--loves it!

Left to Right: Cubannie Links Tupac Rosary, $34; Complete Technique AK 47 Fun Pendant, $340; Muskrat Trapper Hat, $399.
Thank you, NINA SKY!
Check out the ladies's real talk new single, "On Some Bulls***", and other goodies at the NINA SKY Myspace page and tell 'em the FB sent ya...

Intern at Jimmy Choo!

Fashionista.com has the scoop on an NYC internship at shoestop Jimmy Choo:
The say, "Jimmy Choo’s in dire need of a PR intern to start immediately. They need someone at least three days a week from 9am to 6pm. If you’ve interned in fashion PR before, and they’d prefer it if you have, you know the drill. Sample tracking, working with magazines, stylists, celebs (especially since it’s awards season). You also need to have a handle on Excel and PowerPoint, be detail oriented, a team player and obviously have a deep love for all things fashion, shoes and bags especially. The best part? They’ll give you $10 a day for lunch, cover your subway pass and give you school credit if you need it."
Interested? Send an e-mail to jimmychoo.press@gmail.com.com.
Good luck!

Hot! Or Hmm...:Kanye West and Friends

Kanye West is in the news as he and his fashionable gang are making appearances in shows all over Paris...

Source
I'm a fashion junkie (obvs), so I'm loving the three finger rings, eighties shades, and Goyard cases. But what do you think? Hot or Hmm...?
Bonus: A message from Mr. West...

Martin Louis the King Jr?? Hmm, I think someone has lost their marbles and replaced them with overpriced accessories...at least he looks fly!

Fashion Bomb 101: Goyard Bags

Wondering about that black Goyard case? A little fashion history care of the website CoolHunting.com:

"The French have enjoyed leather goods from Maison Goyard since 1853. Known for quality, endurance and classic style more than bowing to the trends of the day, Goyard has been a fixture of the French luxury good scene for a long time. Today Goyard is as exclusive and chic as ever thanks to the fashion crowd that has rediscovered its charms. The unique linen, cotton and hemp canvas is covered in hand-painted dots in four colors and is nearly indestructable. Wallets and card cases for guys, bags and accessories for women and collars and dog accessories for the fashionable [pets] in your life. Bags start above $1,000. Available in the U.S. exclusively at Barney's New York; in Paris at Maison Goyard (and only a handful of other locations around the world)."

And the Winner Is...

So the winner of the Fashion Bomb Internship with 44.4% of the vote is...
...Vuitton!
About his win, Vuitton says, "Thank you ladies SO much for affording me the opportunity! The experience for me was more than fulfilling, simply because I enjoyed every minute of every task. As of now, I'm actually smiling from ear to ear because, honestly, as corny as this may seem, I've never won anything before. And to win something like this at a time like now is beyond words."
You deserve it!
Enjoy your goodies from Essence, Tresemme, DJPremium, Gilt Groupe, Urban Decay, and Reebok!
A special thanks to our sponsors, all the intern candidates, and all your fabulous readers who made your opinions known!
Vuitton will hit the ground running this week--keep an eye peeled for his posts!
Bisous!
PS Ashley has agreed to feed our vintage style fix with a few guest blogspots. Stay tuned for her as well!

Real Style: Boombox

Hey!
So it was Men's Fashion Week in Paris, and parties were poppin' with lots of fashionable folks. A friend and I went to a Boombox party at a club called Regine's close to the Champs Elysees:
Boombox is a notorious party described by Time Out as, "one of the wildest parties in the world, splicing freaky fashion, a fierce musical mix and carefree flamboyance." I scanned the crowd for a Fashion Bomb worthy diva and came upon this fierce fashionista:

It was honestly too loud for me to hear her name or the designer of this dress, but I loved her frock's cinched waist, eye catching metallic material, and open back. And check out her pose!
What do you think of her style?
*There's more where that came from! Check back next week for the following installment.

Kanye's Louis Vuitton Sneakers Debut on the Runway

Designer B Michael On Criticisms of Michelle Obama

Not all African-American designers are up in arms over Michelle Obama's Fashion Choices! Designer B. Michael...
...issued the following press release after the Black Artists Association expressed their distaste:

"For the record I would like to state that the statement made on behalf of the Black Artists Association does not represent my point of view.
I understand their sensitivity and respect their right to express it.
I personally believe it is an unfair expectation to place on the First Lady. Fashion is subjective and a matter of personal choice.
As a designer of Color I would encourage the fashion industry, editors and media to lead the way and be more inclusive. True change in America is going to be a collective effort.
As an American Designer I am excited that Mrs. Obama, in her role as the First Lady, will heighten the awareness of American style which resonates into business and jobs in the fashion industry."
I applaud Mrs. Obama for her style and her choices. Most of all for wearing what really matters, dignity and grace."
Well said!

We're in the home stretch!
The candidates truly showed their skills with these last two wardrobe queries! Check 'em out:
Lola says, "Hi! I live here in NYC and even though it is freezing cold and snowing, I am thinking about black leather jackets for Spring...do you have any affordable suggestions that I can hunt down now? Thanks!"
Amber and Anitra chose the same Victoria Secret finds, with Amber saying, "I scoped out these cute leather jackets just for you (no faux, here!), all $160 and under! Enjoy!"

1. Cropped Leather Ruffle Jacket, $149. 2. Motorcycle Jacket, $159. 3. Halogen Crinkle Leather Jacket, $118
Jemise says, "There’s never a shortage on black leather jackets, so here are some affordable ones that will surely make your spring a fashionable one!"

1. Silence & Noise Motorcycle Jacket, $128. 2. Victoria’s Secret Crop Ruffle Leather Jacket, $149. 3.Express Cropped Leather Motorcycle Jacket, $209. 4. Nine West Cropped Leather Jacket, $149

1. Leather Motorcycle Jacket, $325. 2. Mjulian Leather Jacket, $140. 3. Marc New York Black Leather Banded Zip Jacket, $329.

Lastly, Jaida from the Blog The Coolest Period says, "I'm supposed to be going out to party with my sister for her birthday next weekend. I don't usually go out so I don't have anything to wear. I have skinny jeans and flats but all the tops I have are too casual and my flats are a little too casual too. Any suggestions? P.S. I'm a plus size college kid with limited funds. LOL I usually shop at American Eagle, Gap, Target, and Old Navy."
Suzy says, "I understand limited funds, I'm a college student myself! For tops you want something flirty, sexy or glamorous to pull off with jeans. Look for ruffle details and studs or rhinestones to give your outfit more drama. I also threw in some flat boots for comfort, and a vest for a polished look!"

1.Corsage Top in Black, $35. 2. Francesca Asymmetrical Ruffle Top by Aryn K, $55. 3. Jewel Studs Corset Top, $28. 4. Metal Stud Tiered Tunic, $23. 5. Estella Faux Leather Boots, $39. 6. Gianni Bini "Ritz", $50. 7. Gabriella Rocha Alyson, $40. 8. Jeffrey Campbell Find Mustard and Brown Combo Leather Flat, $89. 9. Kimchi Blue Tuck Vest, $30. 10. No Nonsense Vest in Black, $32.
Jemise found Jaida a couple plus sized options, plus versatile black heels:
1. Animal print smocked tunic, $44. 2. Corset Collard Shirt, $39. 3. Nine West Almond Toe Pumps, $79. 4. BCBGirls Pump, $80.
Ashley went the plus sized route as well, offering this advice, "I think nothing compliments an edgy skinny jean more than a flirty, romantic blouse. Also, throw on a pair of flats in a jewel tone that absolutely pops!" She offered a dozen options, here are a few of her suggestions:
1. PIAPO Sweet Lace Yolk Top, $24. 2. Sheer Bow Striped Blouse, $45. 3. Torrid Johnny Collar Halter Top, $38. 4. Steve Madden Kobraa, $69. 7.Paul Smith, $414. 6. Purple Snakeskin Flats, $18.

Look 1:

Phew! They put in work, no?
Take a moment to reflect on all the interns' hard work, and check back this afternoon to vote!

Intern Mail Bombs Pt 1: Kim Kardashian's Grey Coat, Malinda Williams' Floral Jacket, and Mo'Nique's Dolman Sleeve Top!

Hey!
It's Friday..woo hoo!
Today is the last day of the intern contest. The candidates were given 5 Mail Bombs to solve, and each searched for the best answers. Vuitton, Amber, and Ashley answered all questions, and everyone seemed to answer the same questions in different ways. There was so much info that I had to split Mail Bombs in two! Here's part one, where the hopefuls help solve a few celebrity wardrobe questions:
Sabine says, "I really like this coat that Kim has on in this picture..."
"...I'm still looking to buy a coat, especially this color, can you find one just like hers except cheaper because hers is probably really expensive?"
Vuitton says, "We found some great jackets at a fraction of Kim’s cost, minus her fab Balenciaga bag of course!"

1. Delia’s Kelsey Peacoat, $79.50. 2. Faux Fur Collar Tweed trench coat, $119. 3. TFNC wool rich button tie waist coat, $89.
Ashley adds, "Here are some alternatives that will hopefully break necks, not wallets! Hope you likey!"
1. AE Belted Pea Coat, $50 2. GAP Long Wool Blend Pea Coat, $100. 3. Kelsey Belted Pea Coat, $60. 4. Marc New York Double Breasted Cashmere, $261.
Anitra thought this $38 Joelle Wool Coat fit the bill...
Jemise liked these options from Delia's and Nordstrom:
Left to Right: Kelsey Belted Peacoat, $79.50; Coffee Shop Textured Belted Coat, $98.
And Amber found these coats from Victoria's Secret & the GAP:
1. Belted Coat (comes in Heather Grey!), $129. 2. Ruffle Hem Coat, $99. 3. Puff Sleeve Wool Coat, $70., 4. Long Double Breasted Coat, $100.

Next Ericka says, "I spotted this jacket Malinda Williams was wearing on theybf.com and fell in love."
"...Can you find a more affordable version for a recessionista?"
Vuitton says, "Florals and bold prints are the names of the game, and we happened to find a few coats that follow the trend, but are also recession friendly:"

1. Foliage Silhouette Coat, $40. 2. Collage Boutique Floral knee length coat, $95. 3. Pat Field Floral Coat, $100. 4. Susan Lucci Floral Print Trench, $110. 5. Custo Barcelona double button coat, $207.
Anitra felt this $138 Earthly Garden Marvela Jacket from Chico's would do the trick:
Ashley spied these chic options:
1. Nanette Lepore Brocade, $330. 2. Roberto Cavalli Hand Painted Trench, $5433 3. Juicy Couture Belted Trench, $243.
And Amber proposed these cute picks:

1. Oscar de la Renta, $2,490. 2.Moschino Cheap and Chic Damask Coat, $895. 3. Thakoon for Target Canvas Floral Trench, $45.

Lastly, Danica from D.C. says, "I absolutely love Mo’Nique’s blouse in this picture taken recently during the Sundance Film Festival."
"...Where can I find it or something comparable to it?"
Ashley says, "Hey Danica! I thought Mo’nique looked great in her Dolman sleeved blouse! The silhouette is perfect for highlighting assets and, ahem, concealing not so desirable holiday pounds. I hope my offerings are up to your standard!"

1. Dolman Sleeve Henley Tunic, $22. 2. Long Sleeved Knit Peasant Top, $38. 3. Mossimo Dolman, $12. 4. Long Sleeve Pleated Slinky Tunic, $17.
Anitra compiled these colorful tops from Shopbop:
1. Bop Basics, Dolman Top, $45. 2. Lauren Conrad, Milley Top, $120. 3.Haute Hippe, Long Sleeve Modal Jersey Top, $87.
Vuitton spotted these low priced options:

1.Ada Cinched Tunic, $15.80. 2. The Artist’s Tee, $35. 3. Draped Colorblock Top, $19. 4. Victoria Boat Neck Tunic, $22.
And lastly, Amber says, "Achieve her look with these fashion finds:"
1. Satin ¾ Sleeve Top, $9. 2. Dolman Sleeve Jersey Top, $59. 3. Bell Sleeve Twist Front Top, $41. 4. Bell Sleeve Quilted Blouse, $44.

Who Rocked it?
Come back later for part two of Mail Bombs, and, most importantly, to vote for your favorite! Good luck to everyone!

Hot! or Hmm...:Rihanna at the Feeding America Ball

One shoulder styles are certainly a hot spring trend, and no one shows it off more than Fashionista of the Year Rihanna, who wore this yellow Jasmin di Millo bubble dress to the RIAA and Feeding America Inauguration Charity Ball in Washington, D.C...
I adore yellow, and this color complements Rih Rih's skin tone, but something about the bust of this dress makes me go Hmm....
What do you think?

Intern Candidate Vuitton: Sessilee Lopez in i-D Magazine

"Top model Sessilee Lopez channels her inner Diana Ross and looks über-fab doing so in the November 2008 issue of i-D Magazine..."

"Talk about divas getting’ money!"

~Vuitton

Intern Candidate Vuitton: Happy Birthday Gilt Groupe!

"That’s right Fashion Bombers! Our fab sponsor Gilt Groupe is celebrating their one-year anniversary with a private dinner! Not only will they continue to give us incredible deals on designer clothing and footwear, but they are also expanding into beauty products."
"Founders Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson will be hosting a private dinner at Shang, a new restaurant on the Lower East Side. Elle’s editor at large Nina Garcia, designer Peter Som, and the designer of Michelle Obama’s marvellous inaugural ball gown, Jason Wu, will be co-hosting the event.
Congrats!"
~Vuitton

Intern Candidate Suzy: Not Everyone Loves Michelle Obama's Fashion

"Although Michelle Obama received lots of praise for her fashion choices on Inauguration Day, WWD reports that the Black Artists Association did not join the chorus..."
"...Amnau Eele, the founder of the Black Artists Association criticized Michelle Obama for not choosing a garment designed by an African-American. She said, “If you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?”
"I personally think Michelle looked phenomenal. She picked ensembles that suited her body, were appropriate for the occasion, and modern (Jason Wu just won the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund award). Although I would have liked to see her in an African American design, I fully understand the decisions she made. What do you think?"
~Suzy

Intern Candidate Jemise: Andre 3000 named one of GQ's Best New Designers

"Andre' Benjamin known as Andre 3000 of the hip-hop group OutKast was recently named one of GQ's best new designers of America..."
"His Benjamin Bixby line is sensational and I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing! Read his interview on GQ and see more pictures here.
~Jemise

Cute! And I must state that Vuitton pitched this idea as well, but he turned in three stories, so we'll still be able to see him shine later today!

Intern Candidate Ashley: Vogue's Documentary 'The September Issue'

"It’s bold. It’s iconic. It's Legendary. The September Issue of fashion Bible Vogue has become one of the most anticipated annual books within the fashion industry, on par with Vanity Fair’s March Hollywood Issue. Every year it promises more; who can forget the 2004 issue that, for the first time in ages, featured models on the cover (including Ethiopian stunner Liya Kebede)? For the first time Vogue editrix Anna Wintour has allowed cameras in her hallways. Filmmaker R.J. Cutler and his team have compiled a documentary chronicling the making of the 2007 issue, the biggest ever. “The September Issue” premiered over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival."

"Cutler says of Vogue, “My observation with the creativity in the hallways and offices is that Vogue is like the mist. You don’t think it’s raining and all of a sudden you’re soaking wet.”
Cutler compiled the film out of 300 hours of footage that followed not only La Wintour, but her ingénue daughter Bee Schaffer, and Creative Director Grace Coddington. The commentary revolves around the tight ship that Anna Wintour obviously runs. Cutler promises an unbiased portrait of “The Pope of Fashion” and her staff by acknowledging the glamour involved, but highlighting the grueling hours of work required in assembling such a massive publication.
Check out the videos below in which Anna answers pre-selected questions at the screenings Q& A and an exuberant fan gushes over the film:

Intern Candidate Amber: Dolce and Gabbana to Launch Makeup Line

"It looks like Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna want to outfit you in Dolce and Gabanna from head to toe--literally. People reports that the Italian designers will launch a new cosmetic line this spring. Packaged in gold compacts and tucked into gold pouches, colors will consist of shades of “deep blue and gold.” Sounds just right for spring and summer!"
"Actress Scarlett Johansson has been tapped to be the face of the line, which was created with input from legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath.
Tell us, are you looking forward to Dolce and Gabanna makeup?"
~Amber

Intern Candidate Anitra: Donna Karen to Go Furless

"Don't look for any fur pieces in Donna Karan's upcoming fall 2009 line! PETA, who is notorious for attacking celebrities and designers, launched a website (recently removed) urging Donna Karan to cease and desist her fur use:"
"...Since the website's launch and removal, the designer's line will be be fur free. Donna Karen announced she has no plans to use fur in the future."

Intern Candidate Anitra: Why Didn't I think of That?

Last but certainly not least, we have fashionable Anitra, who also went for a beauty angle in a different way, highlighting a cool product currently on the market.
Enjoy!
"Sometimes, we come across products that are so simply genius we think, "why didn't I think of that?" No matter who the mastermind is, this product should be staple in every Fashion Bomber's beauty stash. For those who can't part with their mascara on their lower lashes, but hate raccoon eyes, Tarte has got you covered. Tarte's Bottoms Up - Lower Lash Mascara ($16, Sephora)...."
"...features a mini brush that allows you to reach the tiniest lashes for even application. The water-resistant formula is paraben, mineral oil, and sulfate free. Genius and good for you too!"
Well that does it! This is the last intern new feature post before our finalists duke it out tomorrow with their individual newsy items.
Keep the great comments coming, I'm loving it!

Intern Candidate Amber: Beauty Bomb

Candidate Amber thinks we could use a bit more beauty. Take a peek at her beauty bomb on Fashion Bomb regular, Tyra Banks:
"Tyra Banks looked ready for spring on the red carpet of the launch party for America’s Next Top Model Obsessed. Tyra paired her bronzed skin with glossy fuchsia lips and deep pink cheeks. She finished off the glamorous look with a smoky eye and long lashes."
"...Try these products to recreate Tyra's look:"

1. For gorgeous skin with a sexy glow to boot, try Iman’s Second to None Luminous Foundation, $15.
2. For rosy cheeks to brighten up your complexion, Nars Blush in Crazed, $25 is a must.
3. Get a gorgeous smoky eye in a snap with Stila’s Smoky Eye Talking Palette in The Bronzes (the compact actually talks you through it!), $40.
4. Lashes that go on for days are a breeze with L'Oreal’s Double Extend Beauty Tubes Lash Extension Effect Mascara in Blackest Black, $11.
5. Finish off your look with glossy raspberry colored lips with L'Oreal’s HIP Shine Struck Liquid Lipcolor in Tainted, $12.
Fabulous!"
I like the step by step, don't you?

Intern Candidate Ashley: Vintage Style

Today we have an entry from Mississippi diva Ashley, who proposed that we do Style Files with a throwback twist. In her intro letter, she said, "As a monthly feature, "Vintage Style," would feature a fabulous look from the past, a modern way to rock it, and items along with their retailers where the pieces can be found!" For her post, she chose to profile classic Southern Belle, Whitley Gilbert. Enjoy!
"1987’s Cosby show spin-off “A Different World” was initially intended to be a vehicle for bohemian beauty Lisa Bonet. While we enjoyed Denise Huxtable’s antics for awhile, the show was inevitably stolen by the almost eerily polished Jasmine Guy. For six seasons southern debutante Whitley Gilbert (nee Wayne!) sashayed across the fictional Hillman College in an array of fur coats, Italian leather pumps, Louis bags, and a sickening arsenal of Chanel suits. The messages the show delivered were always positive (who else still watches the re-runs?) and more often than not punctuated with a chic look from their resident Southern Belle. Whitley’s wardrobe consisted of classics that would be appropriate in any situation and, most importantly, were timeless. The show ended in 1993, but Whitley’s style, as Mademoiselle herself would say, remains.
Want Whitley’s classic look, but with a modern flair? Try these cute (and affordable) pieces:"

1. Go International Houndstooth Pencil Skirt, $6. 2. Baby Rib Long Sleeve Turtleneck, $27. 3. Textured Metal Elastic Bracelet, $10. 4. Double Bead Necklace, $9. 5. Victorian Portrait Ring, $7. 6. Vintage Chanel 2.55 Quilted Bag, $2,250* 7. Diamondnet Fishnets (In Black), $9.50. 8. Skinny Minnie Belt Bright, $12.
*(Ok, I snuck one splurge in with the Chanel, but follow the link to borrow or steal it!)"
Ok, I love this idea! Imagine the other Vintage Styles we can profile: Diana Ross, Diahann Carroll, Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker...I love it.
Would it work as a new feature?

Day 3: Internship Contest

Ola Lovelies!
I'm just coming down from the sheer excitement of yesterday. I couldn't stop myself from watching Obama's inauguration video and clapping to myself. Yes we did!!
Today is Day 3 of the Fashion Bomb internship contest! Keep an eye peeled for fun posts from contenders Anitra, Ashley, and Amber.

And a note about the contest: Adriana and I really did scour through all the applicants with a fine toothed hot comb, and chose the finalists after everyone competed in a preliminary contest. While absolutely everyone did fabulously, we could only choose a handful, and we think the top picks are the bomb!
With that said, enjoy, and continue to let us know what you think. Also, stay tuned tomorrow for the 'tern takeover: an onslaught of the hottest beauty and fashion news on the web!
Bisous!

Sessilee Lopez for Allure's February Issue

Check out this month's Allure Magazine for a spread featuring Italian Vogue vet Sessilee Lopez:

Source
I absolutely love that magazines are using more women of color in their pages; it certainly is refreshing. But part of me feels that as ad dollars are dwindling, print mags are looking to last minute gimmicks to get any and every one (meaning us) to buy them on newsstands. Perhaps I'm being cynical...

Michelle Obama Chooses Designer Jason Wu

Um, can we say stunning?
Barack defines dapper in a tux and white bowtie, while Michelle sparkles in a white chiffon one shouldered gown by 26-year-old designer Jason Wu. Who is Mr. Wu?
A Parson's graduate and native of Taiwan, Wu has only been designing for a few years and just recently got picked up by major stores like Nordstrom. In an interview, when asked about the probability of Michelle picking his design, he said it was "a long shot."
But Wu, like Obama, shows that absolutely everything is possible, regardless of race or age.
No excuses stylistas!
Go forth in fashion...

Michelle Obama in Isabel Toledo

Michelle Obama has started off Inauguration Day in designer Isabel Toledo:
Curious about the designer? Here's an excerpt on the Isabel Toledo from Phaidon's The Fashion Book:

"Latin Flavor, surreal lines, and futuristic content define Isabel Toledo's radical fashion sewn in the tradition of couture. Toledo, who speaks of herself as a seamstress rather than a fashion designer, creates in the manner of couturiers such as Madame Vionnet and Madame Gres. Like them, she does not start from a flat sketch, but envisions clothing in three dimensions, always bearing a shape in her mind, usually a circle or a curved line. 'I love the maths behind the romance,' she says of her so-called liquid architecture's craftsmanship....Toledo's husband, Ruben, known for his whimsical fashion illustrations, manages the business side of the New York based company and acts as her creative alter ego."

Pssst, First Lady Obama is also wearing Jimmy Choo heels and J.Crew gloves! The little ladies, Sasha and Malia, are in J.Crew Crewcuts. They. are. adorable.

This Week In Chic: Inauguration

There are so many celebrities taking over D.C, I had to present you this Week in Chic early:

I'm loving Kerry's look! What about you?

Intern Candidate Jemise: Beauty Bomb

Our last intern post for today is from Jemise, repping from Hampton U! She thinks the Fashion Bomb would benefit from more Beauty Posts. Check out her beauty bomb, and, as usual, tell us your thoughts!
"Spring time is right around the corner, and as you update your wardrobe for the season, it’s only right that you update your beauty cabinet and make-up bag too! Warmer weather welcomes bright colors, and it’s the perfect time to experiment with new trends:"

Try these products for a bright, springy look:

Pictured: L’Oreal HIP Metallic Duo Sculpted, OPI Nail Color MonSooner or Later, L’Oreal HIP Metallic Duo Magnetic, Victoria’s Secret Mozaic Bronzer, Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Lip Gloss Cherry Bomb, Essie Nail Polish Shorty Pants, 8. MAC Blushcreme Laid Mac Lipglass Strawberry Blonde, OPI Nail Color I’m India Mood For Love, Iman Blush Duo Posh, KLS Makeup Eyeshadow.
"With all that color, its important to make sure you have the ever chic staple of black. Big bold lashes and the sultry smoky eye are both winners throughout the season. Try these to really make your eyes pop:

Pictured: Cover Girl Lash Blash, NARS Eyeliner Kohl, Maybeline Eyelash Curler, L’Oreal Eyeshadow Quad Smoke.
I'll admit, I know nothing about beauty, so this is definitely welcome!
The comments section is open!
Stay tuned for posts from the rest of our intern contestants tomorrow.

Intern Candidate Suzy: Home Decor Finds Under $100

Candidate Suzy thinks we at the Fashion Bomb could mix in more home decor with our fashion finds. Here's her post:
"Now that it is officially 2009, I have made a New Years Resolution to expand my fabulousity beyond my wardrobe. Let’s face it, most fashionistas have plenty of clothes but shouldn’t our homes reflect the same creativity and style? Here are ten home decor finds for under $100 ( for the recessionista of course):"

Intern Candidate Vuitton Bain: Daily Bread

Intern contestant Vuitton suggested we start a new section called Daily Bread. Here's his post!
"Hey Guys!
So of course we're always on the lookout for exciting finds--we’re sure you guys are too! In love with those shoes you just bought? What about that statement clutch that will leave the kids gagging? Show it off here!
"...We’ve come up with a new section of the site where you guys can post pics along with the details of your latest buys. Whether you bought it because you had a rough day, or you just needed something new in your closet, post it here!
"
Devon says, "I realized I didn’t have a brown leather watch, so in light of this recession, I didn’t want to go crazy. So I hopped on over to Guess and picked this one up for $125..."
Sheryl says, "After a rough week at work, I thought I could use a little retail therapy, so I bought this cute babydoll dress from Asos.com."
I like.
Would you be down for Daily Bread?

Day 2: Internship Contest

Happy Inauguration Day Fashionistas!
Where are you watching the inauguration?
I myself have to work today (boo!), but should be home around 6pm, just in time to watch the ceremony (we're six hours ahead). What about you?
Yesterday we had a bit of an upset with the contest, as many of you, it seems, weren't as gassed about our intern picks as we were! We respect your opinions, so we're willing to add one more finalist to the mix! Our last addition is Anitra, a journalism student from Florida A&M University...
She says, "I subscribe to Vogue and In Style and I love to recreate looks. I was picked as Glamour.com's Best Dressed Reader of the Day and was also a contestant in The Fashion Bomb's Most Fashionable Fashion Bomber contest." Stylish and smart!
She submitted this example of Real Style for our perusal...
...and will be hitting us with a beauty bomb shortly!
Check in throughout the day for posts by the finalists interspersed with ones by myself and Adriana. This is their shining moment, so leave comments and let them know how they did!
Bisous!

Happy Martin Luther King Day!

In celebration of Martin Luther King Day, a video montage of his powerful 'I Have a Dream' Speech:

An excerpt:
"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood...
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today."

Real Style: The Fashion Bomb Intern Contest!

Happy Monday!
So today is a big day: it's day one of the Fashion Bomb intern contest! We received over 50 submissions from fashionistas all over the continent--from Florida to New York, Cali to Chicago and even Canada!
As soon as candidates e-mailed their interest, we put them to work to scour their local town for Real Style. Read on for the 411 on our finalists, and also tell us: do they have what it takes?
Our first Fashion Bomb Intern contestant is Vuitton Bain:

A University student in Canada, Vuitton is a native Bahamian and fashion fanatic! He says, "To me, fashion is more than just the label. You have to understand colors, textures, the design aesthetic of designers, the poetry involved in creating that garment. I'd like to believe that I have an innate sense of style, and when it comes to fashion, I know I'd get the job done perfectly." I think so too! For his Real Style, he snapped a picture of a fly young lady, "wearing a feathered tube dress paired with a vintage belt and pink FCUK pumps..."
Great job, Vuitton. Looking forward to seeing more!
Our next finalist is Suzy from Orlando, Florida:
A fashion student, Suzy says, "I believe that style comes from within no matter where you are..." With a tight deadline, Suzy decided to submit Real Style from her church service:
They better work!
Next up, we have Jemise...
...a student at Hampton University, Jemise looked to a few of her fellow students for style inspiration...

She says, "I decided to get some real guy style since I'm sure you'll get lots of pictures of fabulous ladies!" Good thinking!
Representing for the South is Fashion Bomber Ashley...
...a senior at The University of Southern Mississippi, she says, "I have two major missions in life 1) to bring awareness to the unique style found in the southern states, and 2) promote awareness of the beauty in being brown within the fashion industry." For her Real Style, she kept it local, snapping a few pics with friends:
Fun!
Last but not least, we have Amber..
She says, "For me, studying, analyzing, reading about and just looking at fabulous clothes, shoes and bags, makes me want to challenge myself to work at creating the fiercest wardrobe possible." She captured a bit of cool winter style in her neighborhood...
...that does it!
Adriana and I are so excited about this contest, and know the interns will knock your socks off!
Stay tuned this week for their posts, and remember, on Friday, you vote for your favorite.
Until then, what do you think of our candidates? Are they the bomb or what?
Bisous!
*Huge THANK YOU to everyone who entered. We wish we could pick you all:)
