Plus Sized Style Spotlight: Toccara
So I've been getting lots of e-mails lately imploring me to represent more plus sized fashionistas.
While I've profiled plus sized sirens Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah in past Style Files, there's a new voluptuous vixen in town, representing for the girls with a bit more curve:
Toccara Jones.
This former ANTMer parlayed her bubbly personality and undeniable charm into stints at BET and the pages of Italian Vogue and Essence. Her style has evolved accordingly, by focusing on fits that show off her best assets.
For Toccara, the rule is black, black, and more black...
...that bring the eye downward, and the focus more towards the center of the body. When she diverts from black, she stunts in dresses in eggplant or turquoise...
...or pops on a belt on other occasions to highlight her smallest part:
Chic! For more casual events, she opts for a v neck vest or t-shirt....
..worn with jeans in straight or boot cut styles to balance out her hips.Want a chic plus size look? Try these options:
1. Monif C Marilyn Convertible Dress 26, $75. 2. Torrid White Purple Zebra Head V-Neck Tee, $28. 3. London Times Woman Crepe Belted Dress, $90. 4. Sutton Studio Exclusive Bi-Stretch Cap Sleeve Dress - Plus Sizes, $150. 5. Womens Rise Boot Cut Sweetheart Gray Jeans, $20. 6.Camilla Wraparound Dress in Red, $135. 7. Rachel Pally White Label Short Caftan Dress, $248. 8. Black Lola Ruched Dresses by Kiyonna, $126. 9. Robbie Bee Crisscross Silk Chiffon Dress, $88.

$350 Dress: Comme Des Garcons for H&M
The fashion blogosphere is literally in a tizzy over the Comme des Garcons for H&M Collection. Why? Exorbitant Prices:
Now $350 for a dress is a lot for H&M, but apparently a low ball price for Comme des Garcons. On the bright side, this might calm down all the fighting endemic to H&M designer sales. Remember this?
No more Project Runway?
Seems Project Runway is on hiatus for the time being...
According to an NBC Press Release, "NBC Universal is pleased that the court granted our motion for a preliminary injunction against The Weinstein Company. The overwhelming evidence demonstrated that The Weinstein Company violated NBC Universal's right of first refusal to future cycles of Project Runway. After hearing all of the evidence, the court issued an order prohibiting The Weinstein Company from taking the show or any spin-off to Lifetime."
Hm, sad news, though I must say that I'm kind've over these reality shows that are great for TV, but don't produce any real stars in their industry. Remember this NY Magazine article on the stars of Bravo?
From the article, "With shows like Project Runway and Top Chef, the Bravo cable channel skillfully packages the fantasy that gifted amateurs can break into the big time. But make no mistake: It is a fantasy." Read the article here.

Trend Forecast: Spring 2009
Today, Adriana gives us a rundown of next year's Spring trends.
Stay tuned next week for what you should buy for Fall.
Enjoy!
*******************************************************************
Fashion Week is over and the looks we just saw on the runways won’t be in stores until at least January.
Claire and I noticed several trends that ran throughout the collections, however, that we wanted to share in order to prep FB readers for what’s coming (especially since many of you might be changing over to your fall clothes and wondering what to save from this past season).
Overall, the Spring '09 looks were simple and un-fussy, and referenced quite a few specific eras/cultures. There are some new trends (jodhpurs), old trends (jumpsuits), and trends that hardly ever seem to go away (LBDs)—take a look:
Open-toed shoe boots at Tibi, Miss Sixty, and Iodice:
Hippie-chic at Baby Phat, Milly, and Reem Acra:
East meets West at Reem Acra, Vivenne Tam, and Tibi:
Jodhpur-esque trousers at BCBG Max Azria, Tibi, and Iodice:
Jumpsuits at BCBG, Tibi, and Baby Phat:
Fresh takes on the LBD from Zac Posen, Nicole Miller, and Vivienne Tam:
Which trends you think you'll indulge in (or pass on)?

Breaking into Fashion: Ursula Stephen
Hey!
It's been quite a while since we've had a Breaking into Fashion post, so today I wanted to give you guys the scoop on Ursula Stephen...
...hairstylist to the stars.
While she's well known for taming the manes of Michelle Williams and Keyshia Cole, she's probably most recognized for gifting the ever fashionable Rihanna her oft imitated pixie cut:
...whose edge always adds to Rihanna's fashionable fits!
Thankfully, Ursula put down her styling tools to tell you hopefuls how to break into her business:
She says, "I caught my "big break" by working in the salon. I had really great clientele, a couple of which worked at labels, a couple who knew people in the industry. So it was basically word of mouth."
Starting at a humble Brooklyn boutique, Ursula rose through the ranks thanks to her unquestionable talent and positive attitude. She says, 'I always kept my eyes on the prize, thought outside the box, and stayed upbeat no matter how far away my dreams seemed..."
Currently in France, Ursula travels the world, packing all her hot combs and adapters in her carry ons. She says, "I'll never forget having dinner with Roberto Cavalli. Rihanna was invited to his show in Milan, and afterwards he invited the whole team to his restaurant for a private dinner. I was actually having casual conversation with him, and found out we share the same sign!!"
For women of color, she has this pointed advice, "Always go that extra mile, because as sad it may sound, we as people of color have not really overcome as much as we think we have. It's gotten easier but its not easy."
In sum, she says to, "Be sure about your love for hair; and ultimately do what makes you happy."
Sound advice for any profession!

Joy Bryant Blogs + Pharrell for Barack Obama
*I always knew Joy Bryant was more than just a pretty face...
...turns out that while she was taking in all the shows during Fashion Week, she was also guest blogging for a website called Starworks, snapping pictures while also offering a bit of commentary. About Herve Leger she says, "[My friend personifies] the Herve Leger woman: unapologetically sexual and fiercely self-assured… the kind of woman that rolls out of bed, tosses her hair, and throws on a hot little tight dress, all the while daring the world to judge her." OK then!
*Seems in addition to designers, lots of artists have offered their support to Barack Obama. Check this shirt designed by swoon worthy producer Pharrell:
The theme is "Obama stands apart from the crowd." Yes he does! Get yours for $60 at store.barackobama.com.
*Psssst: Do you Rock an Obama T??? Send your pix to thefashionbomb@gmail.com!!
*And Suzy Menkes of the IHT wonders if fast fashion is going out of fashion...
She says, "As a phenomenon, speedy style has given a shake up to the industry and brought the look of the moment to main street, with the collaboration of leading designers. It has proved that fashion does not have to be elitist and that big names are as capable of creating cheap chic as haute couture....But, as with all things fashionable, from kitten-heel mules to girly frills, there is a moment when it is over. And for fast fashion, that is now..." What do you think? I love me some Forever 21!! Read more here. [IHT]

Mail Bombs: Celebrity Looks for Less
It's Friday and we have a ton of Mail Bombs to solve:
Let's not delay!
First, T from Tennessee says, "Loving this look on Beyonce..""...It's classy…its sexy…its young but still office ready….please tell me more!! "
Aramide found that Beyonce is wearing this $2,065 RM by Rouland Mouret Pigalle Wool Dress...
Get a similar look for much less with these:
1. ASOS V Backless Pencil Dress, $70. 2. Arden B Belted Pencil Dress, $128. 3. Magaschoni Wool Crepe Dress, $220.
Jasmine says, "I was wondering if you can help me find an outfit like Brandy's in the photo...."
"...I'm really loving the look of those jeans."
Aramide and I collabo'd to find the following look:
1.Reyna Tee, $78. 2. Arden B Off the Shoulder Blouse, $39. 3. American Apparel Faux Denim High Waisted Legging, $42. 4. ASOS Indigo Denim Leggings, $46.50.
Ms. Nelson says, "Where can I find this bag..."
"...Solange wore to a recent event?"
Solange is wearing a red trimmed Louis Vuitton, a style debuted on the Fall 2007 Ready to Wear runway:
Get yours at Louis Vuitton Stores (www.louisvuitton.com).
In a Male Mail Bomb, Kayvin from Ohio says, "I love the shirt that Bow Wow is wearing..."
"...He is like mini T.I. these days so credit who you will with the style... Anyway, can you help me find something similar?"
Get a Bow Wow like shirt with these:
1. Morphine Generation Traditional Button Up Military, $184. 2. Triple Five Soul Drill Military Shirt, $50. 3. Apolis Military Woven in Olive, $68.
Now for a few wardrobe queries:
Lauren says, "I am looking for a fashionable medium to large sized tote bag to use for school. As a broke graduate student, my budget is limited, but I would like something fashionable that will work with a lot of different outfits."
If your budget is limited, I'd say go for a nylon or faux leather tote. Try these under $150 options in colors that are neutral or bold enough to go with anything:
1. French Connection City Quilt Bag, $118. 2. Marc by Marc Jacobs So Real Faser Tote, $98. 3. Nine West Patent Leather Large Tote, $150. 4. Melie Bianco Drawstring Bag, $90. 5. BCBG Max Azria Poem Print Canvas Tote, $88.
Lastly, Anissa says, " I'm going to an awards show in Vegas. Here is the dress and the shoes..."
"...I need your help picking accessories!"
Since your outfit is so plain, you have lots of room to add your own sparkle!
I'd say go with a simple necklace that accents your decolletage, then pile on blinged out and silver bangles with a cocktail ring. Finish it all off with a clutch that incorporates the color of your silver shoes:
1. Juicy Couture Sterling Silver Heart, $150. 2. Jumbo Cocktail Rings, $18 for set of 6. 3. Sterling Silver Chevron Necklace, $50. 4. Tri Colored Envelope Clutch, $30. 5. Crislu Cubic Zirconia Bangle, $125. 6. Calanna Clutch, $25.
We still have so many to catch up on, but that does it for today.
Have wonderful weekends! Soak up the sun before fall starts in earnest!

Black Models at London Fashion Week + House of Dereon Obama T
*NY Fashion Week is done, but it was only the beginning of Fashion Week fury! Some of our favorite models are now stomping across the pond in London:
Check Jourdan Dunn in Issa, Vivienne Westwood, and Aquascatum...
Our girl Chanel in House of Holland, Nathan Jenden, and Aquascatum...
...and other models in shows like Fashion Fringe, Peter Pilotto, and Meadham Kirchhoff..
Thanks to Bethann for raising the 'Black Model' issue and holding all designers accountable. Now, as an aside...don't the London shows look kind've dope...and refreshing??? I think the next stop for the Fashion Bomb might have to be international coverage...[Style.com]
*In the spirit of celebs jumping on the Obama Bandwagon, House of Dereon just released its own Obama T:
Get your t-shirt in navy, red, or white for $60 at the official Barack Obama store.
*If you want Cassie like YSL Tribal Sandals...
...but don't have $940 to spend, go to www.marciano.com for affordable alternatives. These Lacey and Garvin heels ...
...give off a similar look--minus the feathers. And at around $300, they're a relative steal.

Cool Online Find: Rockett Mansion
Hey Fashion Bombers!
Today I wanted to put you on to a new line of vintage and original clothing called Rockett Mansion...Launched just this past May by 2006 Howard University Graduate Melanie Lyke...
...the line consists of supremely well edited shoes, dress, and accessories, all plucked from second hand stores, then remixed with buttons, tailoring, or pleats...
Melanie says her inspirations are, "Postmodern Global Beauty. I love to draw simple, minimalist items from different cultures. They can be glitzy, ornate, doesn't matter as long they are beautiful..."
The Fashion Merchandising student started the Rockett Mansion line because, "I wanted to do my own thing, and didn't want to work for a big fashion house. I was sick of working for places that just didn't 'get it' or understand my aesthetic..."
She continues, "The line is the sum of my love for vintage and living a minimalist lifestyle... I adore the idea of finding beautifully made, well preserved items and mixing them with everyday pieces. Most people see vintage as over-the-top costumes that can't be applied to a daily wardrobe or simply as the attire of hip, starving artists- I beg to differ. Any good stylist knows the key to great personal style is the mixing of old and new as well as expensive and inexpensive. It gives a look dimension and makes it seem effortless."
In addition to being chic, vintage cuts down on waste. "We can easily recycle and use what we already have on this earth because as we all know, polyester isn't going anywhere. It's retail therapy with no buyers remorse."
And you can cut down on spending as well: every Rockett Mansion item is under $50. Perfect for this economic climate!
Check out Rockett Mansion's one of a kind items here. Tell 'em I sent ya!

Style File Throwback: Pam Grier
Hey!
So today, Adriana hits us with a Style File throwback on super sultry actress Pam Grier:
Enjoy!
**********************************************************************
With the return of Halston and flare legs, among other things, '70s fashion has come back and it's a trend that's going to march right on through Fall 2008. Who else embodies that decade's tough, sexy style more than Ms. Foxy Brown herself, Pam Grier?
Confident and sensual, with a touch of Afro-centric--loves it. And what has Ms. Grier said of her status as a fashion icon? "Me, sexy? I'm just plain ol' beans and rice." We would strongly beg to differ.
Channel Pam Grier's style with these pieces:Top Row Left to Right: Michael Kors Penelope Boots, $159; Leather Trench Coat, $80; Solid Petal Necklace, $120; Halter Ruched Fitted Jumpsuit, $69.
Bottom Row: Kimono Sleeve Minidress, $209.

The NY Times on Sky High Shoes + Splurge of the Day
*Bill Cunningham of the New York Times discusses the indomitable presence of sky high, uncomfortables shoes at Fashion Week:
He says, "Without a shadow of a doubt, the handbag is less important and the shoe and the long stretch of leg has arrived in New York like a tornado force. The women are all in these spidery strapped shoes, usually black, very high heels.” [NYTimes]

Try a Trend: Driving Gloves
Hey Guys,
So while the most recent runways are showing you what will be hot next spring, I wanted to clue you into a trend idea that true modern fashionistas can't help but rock:
...driving gloves.
Though the accessory debuted in the Fall 2007 runway shows, the style has been quietly acquired by some of fashion's most forward trensetters due to it's rock & roll, daredevil chic aesthetic:
Victoria Beckham has been spied wearing leather driving gloves with anything from red carpet gowns...
...to jeans and blazers.
And fashionista Rihanna wore a pair with a flouncy dress:
...accessorized with chains and a peek-a-boo bra.
Even guys get in on it, with Kanye pairing his with a white jacket....
....and the singular Karl Lagerfeld accessorizing his uniform with kid gloves.
If you want to go out on a limb this fall, try these:
1. Nordstrom Fingerless Driving Gloves, $78. 2. Carolina Amato Gloves Driving Gloves, Yellow, $149. 3. Carolina Amato Gloves, White, $149. 4. French Connection Driving Gloves, $58. 5. Bloomingdales Leather Driving Gloves, $40.

The Fashion Bomb does Baby Phat Spring 2009
So last night intern Adriana and I made our way to our last show of the season, Baby Phat:
...Kimora was celebrating her 10th year of runway shows, and we were pumped to be in the building!
Packed with New York's finest, the show is always exceedingly entertaining, thanks to a bass driven soundtrack, lithe models, and funky clothes. Though the show aimed to start on time, people took a while to get to their seats, so I seized the moment to snap a few pics. Caught up with Lala...
..who was wearing a LaRok skirt and YSL sandals, and finally met Serena Williams!!!
She was in a major rush to get to her seat, but was gracious enough to take a quick picture with me. Had to do it for mom!!!
Finally, the show began, and other notables like Carmelo Anthony, Danity Kane, Alexis Phifer, Ice T, Coco, and Maxwell filled in the front row:
The collection offered a melange of themes, mirrored in thigh skimming belted Safari dresses, Seventies era jumpers, maxi dresses and hippie-esque headscarves, Western style fringed suede vests, and Mideastern turbans:
Eye catching yet simple, Kimora's collection was fashioned to fit her target demographic of around the way girls with a splash of spunk. I myself was drooling over the models' blinged out rings, bangles, and necklaces that glinted in the spotlight:
...I'll take five!
All in all Baby Phat reflected the fun mix of couture and culture that Kimora has been bringing for the past 10 years. No Fashion Week could be complete without it!
After the show was the afterparty, and Adriana was tuckered out so we parted ways...
I went with my buddy to the Plaza Hotel for a continuation of the festivities:
...the celebration was grand, and the Plaza's ballroom was packed with partygoers sipping champagne and snacking on ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery.
Kimora was out of reach, but I was juiced to finally meet Dee + Ricky (creators of the lego pins for Marc Jacobs)...
...and we toasted to the end of Fashion Week. Now it's time to rest up!
Hope you enjoyed Adriana and I's coverage of Fashion Week. Let us know!
Oh and I took my Flip Video with me to the show and caught some Real Style...stay tuned for that on Monday.

Midday Mail Bombs!
Hey!
So while I'm sure all of you are *loving* the fashion week rundowns, I know you still want your regular Mail Bombs!
....the'terns and I have been crazed this week, but we've solved just a few for your viewing pleasure!
First up, Tiffany says, "So I was getting my daily gossip fix over at YBF and stumbled across this fabulous outfit worn by Rihanna..."
"...If you could help me find similar pieces to recreate this look I would be so grateful."
Get Rihanna's look by combining the following high and low end items:
1. United Bamboo Shawl Collar Jacket, $545. 2. Forever 21 Sunglasses, $6. 3. Delia's Boy Solid Tank, $6. 4. Geren Ford Denim Stretch Twill Zip Back Skirt, $114. 5. Liz Claiborne "Idol Pleasures" Stretch Bracelet, $35.
Next, Jay says, "I was wondering if you could tell find me similar shoes to the ones Tatyana Ali and Elise Neal are wearing??"
If you want a strappy look with ankle details, go with this $179 Rio Leather Sandal...
...from http://www.bebe.com/.
Next, faithful Bomb reader Whitney says, "I was wondering if you could find a similar dress to the one Janet is wearing??"Get in control with this $170 Lauren Ralph Lauren Duke Luxe Jersey Dress:
Miriam says, "I know this is jewelry, but it still counts as fashion mail bomb emergency!! Jordan Sparks wore this chain linked earring at the VMA’s, and I am in LUUUUV with it!!!"
"... I can’t seem to find anything like it anywhere, so can you help??!! I hope so!"
Adriana stepped in, saying, "It looks like Jordin is wearing Pantera's Feather Ear Cuff..."
"... which you can find at Lisa Kline for $1,125.00. If you want a more affordable alternative try this $40 Earwrap with stud...""...from Bajoran." Thanks Adriana!
Nathalie E says, "Claire and Crew: I saw Jada Pinkett Smith in this fabulous dress on Letterman last night and I have to have it for an event I've got coming up..."
"... Could you help me with some budget friendly alternatives to this fabulous dress?"
Aramide and I conspired to find you these affordable options:
1. Rachel Pally Black One Shoulder Dress, $99. 2. Vince One Shoulder Cotton Dress, $94. 3. Arden B One Shoulder Pencil Dress, $118.
And we had a few party related queries!
Nazly says, " I was wondering where I could find a bag like this one?"
".... Also where are her shorts from?"
It looks like Maya of Boxing Kitten is wearing a vintage Gucci bag along with shorts and top of her design. Find vintage Gucci's on Ebay, and pick up a Boxing Kitten outfit here.
Lastly, Gina says, " I am curious to know the designer of the skirt and suspender combo worn by Enyinne of Uptown Emerging Designer's Market at Fashion Bomb's second anniversary gala."
"Moreover, where can I purchase the exact or similar ensemble???"
Enyinne says, "That is from Adeleke's collection - The Olori Collection. That particular design is available by request only right now but you can email Leke at leke@adelekesijuwade.com"
Also, pssst, songstress Keyshia Cole was also spied wearing an Adeleke dress recently...
Get with it!
That does it for today.
There were a *ton* more that we didn't get to, but check back in next Friday, you might be pleasantly surprised.

The Fashion Bomb does Zac Posen
Hey!
So last night after Reem Accra, I tucked into the Zac Posen show in the Tents....
...it was a celebrity swapmeet with Jada Pinkett Smith...
...ALT, Venus, Serena, and Anna...
...as well as a host of other celebs, including Rachel Zoe, Patricia Field, Joy Bryant, and Nina Garcia perched on the front row.
I heard a guy behind me say that he wished to run down and take a picture with the Williams sisters, but was afraid of bodyguards. In the end he decided to stay put....I did the same!
After a bit of hubbub, the show finally started. What can I say? I was impressed:
...Zac showed what he does best: alluring cocktails and fluid gowns, amply ready for any red carpet...
..dominated by flowy fabrics, Zac kept the crowd entertained by balancing neutral white and black with pops of leopard print, yellow, and peach, and throwing in the occasional tailored jacket for good measure:
While he lost me for a second with a couple frothy frocks...
...overall, Zac hit this collection out the water, and I saw many lithe little numbers trendsetting sirens would pluck for an awards show or any other high flashbulb event:
...fierce!
While I hesitated to snap pics before the show, I two-stepped my way backstage afterwards to see what I could see.
I bumped into Joy Bryant, who is tall, thin, and beautiful:
...she was in the middle of telling her friend that she had just 'thrown something on', but her frill laced outfit was very apropos.
Also said 'hey' to old friend Alexis Phifer..
...who is seriously making me want to pop on a red lip.
And of course, had to sidle up to the man of the hour...
...Zac Posen himself! He was super busy receiving accolades, but took a moment to cheese with lil ol me!
With all that excitement, I was done for the night, but no worries: I'm getting my gold stilettos out for the Baby Phat show and afterparty tonight! Should be a good, fun ending to an eventful fashion week.
Stay tuned!
Smootches!

The Fashion Bomb does Reem Acra
Just dipped into the tents...
...for the Reem Acra show where I sat diagonally across from Sanaa Lathan and Ashanti. My pic:
...here's the professional shot...
Much better.
The house was packed with other stars, including Aubrey and DWoods of Danity Kane (and Aubrey's skirted pooch), and the Jays from America's Next Top Model.
The show itself was *beautiful* if not a little all over the place. In my little green notebook, I cited several influences: Indian inspired beadwork to Chinese mandarin collars and Western shirdresses redone in silk...
Competing penchants aside, I was literally floored by the succession of extremely luxe fabrics and details of sequins, brocade, and silk, along with eye popping colors of hot pink, tangerine, iridescent to deep blues, and gold...
...a random choice, but of all the shows, Reem Acra stood out as one where I would unflinchingly wear anything straight from the runway (including the shoes!). Though rich, the collection was wearable and in moments breathtakingly beautiful:

The Fashion Bomb's Model Manual
Hey!
So while we all know the names of the season's hottest young models like Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, and Arlenis Pena...
...Adriana and I have been spying lots of new and perhaps unknown faces on the runway this season!
Today, I decided to give you guys a rundown of a few lesser known faces in the Fashion Bomb's Model Manual.
First, we have Hollis Wakeema...
Born in 1984, this Memphis Tennessee native has been ruling the runway since she signed with Vision Management in 2005. She debuted in the Catherine Malandrino's 2005 fall show, then went on to walk for Vivienne Tam, Marc Jacobs, and Diane von Furstenberg. Now with New York Models, she is the face of Paul Smith Women.
This season, catch her in Douglas Hannant, Nanette Lepore, Benjamin Cho, Marc Jacobs, Sophie Theallet, Chris Benz, Tracy Reese, Abaeté, Rock & Republic, and Rachel Roy.
In past seasons, she's been plucked by Vivienne Westwood, Baby Phat, Tracy Reese, and Duru Olowu!
Next we have Joan Smalls...
This 20 year old siren of Puerto Rican descent is currently signed with Elite models. In 2008 she became the face of Ports 1961, appearing in their print campaign.
Spot her this season in Ports 1961 and Tracy Reese.
In past years, she's done Diane von Furstenberg, Sass & Bide, Benjamin Cho, Heatherette, and James Coviello.
Up next: Samira Carvalho Bento...
This 18 year old Brazilian beauty was discovered in Garota da Capa 2002 contest organized by the Brazilian Raca magazine. Signed with Ford models, she debuted by opening and closing Diane von Furstenberg’s Spring collection in September 2007.
This Season she's stomped in Tracy Reese, Betsey Johnson, and Sophie Theallet. In past seasons, she's been busy with Alexandre Herchcovitch, Custo Barcelona, Diane von Furstenberg, Heatherette, Monique Lhuillier, Nicole Miller, Betsey Johnson, Baby Phat, Tommy Hilfiger, Yigal Azrouel, and L’Wren Scott.
Finally we have a few up and comers who have been spied on the runway (but their bios are not quite known).
There's Nana whose been spotted in Tracy Reese and Halston...
Sana Soegaard who lit up the runway at Cynthia Steffe and Tracy Reese...
And Shelby Coleman...
...who also made an appearance in Tracy Reese, but has been seen this season at Threeasfour and Tory Burch...
...and made cameos in the Resort collectins of Akris and Giambattista Valli.
Gorgeous!

Show Review: Milly by Michelle Smith
Adriana took in the Milly by Michelle Smith show last night.
Enjoy!
****************************************************************
When I walked into Milly’s Spring/Summer 2009 show, the first thing I noticed was a tall, dramatic Moorish arch painted at the top of the runway. Subtle orange lighting and moody, Arab-influenced music also set the tone for what I thought would be a sartorial Moroccan adventure. Imagine my surprise, then, when the show began and, instead, the lights went super-bright and the music changed to blaring sixties rock. As models sporting raffia cotton, crocheted beanies, and trippy prints began to stride down the runway, it became clear that the bernous and fezes I expected were not to be.
Milly’s collection carries Barneys’ upcoming holiday theme, “Have a Hippie Holiday,” right on through to spring. Billowy peasant dresses, tie-dye, and seemingly homespun embroidery, among other things, dominated the Moroccan influence, which was certainly present in the caftans, lace patterns, and some of the hues. It was clear, however, that designer Michelle Smith took the bulk of her inspiration from the era of flower power and free love (though I learned that her trip to Marrakesh was indeed the likely inspiration for the stage’s setting).

ALT Hosts JHud Dinner + The Fashion Bomb in Upscale Magazine!!
*While I hit up the Russell Simmons and Betsey Johnson afterparties last night, seems Andre Leon Talley was hosting an event for Jennifer Hudson. A few pics:
I must say, Jennifer looks ravishing in red.
*Speaking of JHud, she's on the cover of Upscale Magazine's September/October Issue:
...which happens to have a little article on the Fashion Bomb on Page 63!!!
It says, "Aside from providing the latest style trends and stories, [the Fashion Bomb] also takes readers on virtual journeys to events like the renowned New York Fashion Week..." Who Me?!?
Pick up your copy of Upscale today!
*And it seems designers are reacting in interesting ways in regards to the 'Black Model Issue" with some like Sophie Theallet using all black models...
..to others like Betsey Johnson using just one:
Why the extremes? Can't the runways simply reflect your average New York city street? We've got a little bit of everything!

The Fashion Bomb does Vivienne Tam
Hey!
So while Adriana took in an afternoon show yesterday, I headed to the tents for Vivienne Tam...
...I took my buddy Stephanie with me into the Promenade...
..and almost immediately caught sight of recent US Open winner Serena Williams sitting front row:
I was excited--I knew my mother (an avid tennis fan) would have died to have me snap a picture with her, but for the moment I sat in my seat and took in the collection. I must admit, seeing Serena might have been the most interesting part of the show:
Tam, raised in Hong Kong, is known for an 'East meets West' or 'China Chic' sensibility, mirrored in her marriage of Asian inspired tailoring with Westernized fabrics. Chinese influences were evident in high neck dresses with floral appliques:
But with the exception of a few pieces, the collection seemed to be less chic and more reminiscent of a secretary of another generation: think 70's and 80's inspired separates and dresses in florals, reds, and pops of purple:
...while lovely, the offerings were almost shocking in their simplicity, and I was left looking for the piece that would make my mouth water. It came, in part, towards the end of the show, where Tam flexed her skills in cocktails of eye catching colors that melded textures and tones (think satin with sheer, patent leather with chiffon):
...gorgeous. The show ended on a high note, but not quite high enough to offset the rest.
What do you think?
Smootches!
*After the show, I tried to catch Serena, but seems she's as fast off the court as she is on! Homegirl was gone like lightning, but hopefully I can catch up with her later.
**My dress is by a label named Zoa (currently at Pieces in Brooklyn), Shoes by L.A.M.B (I LOVE THEM!), Jewels by Jenny D, natch.
Show Review: Iodice
Adriana does Iodice. Enjoy!
***********************************************************************
The color palette consisted of only five discernable hues: sand, white, deep turquoise, jet black, and a pale mauve. Silk tops with Origami-like folds and ethereal goddess dresses were shown alongside clean-lined trousers, skirts, and dress shorts. The accessories (no jewelry; fingerless gloves; open-toed, strappy, metallic pewter shoe boots) were minimal and added an edge that saved the presentation from being too delicate. Iodice being a Brazilian label there were, of course, several sexy bathing suits and beach ensembles included.

Celebs at Ports 1961 + Kanye West at Proenza Schouler
*So Adriana and I had seats for the Ports 1961 show, but as I said, decided to go to the W Magazine Party instead. I'm so upset, because it seems we missed Joy Bryant and Brandy...
...and Divo himself Andre J...
...who looked fashtastic in a tight weave and all black leather.
Dern it! No worries, we'll be in the tents tonight!
*Seems Kanye West took in the Proenza Schouler show last night front row...He does not look at all happy with what he saw....
*Marc Jacobs does it again...

*And a few celebs rolled out to Calvin Klein's Anniversary Party...
...including Fashion Bomb friend Paula Patton.
Party Time: W Magazine's Fashion Week Affair
So Adriana and I met at the tents, looking to cover Fashion Week...
...but decided to grab a drink instead...
..and head over to W Magazine's New York Affair Party.
The night promised appearances by several celebs, and we weren't disappointed!
I first snapped a pic with party host Paula Patton, who admitted she didn't read blogs because of the nasty things they said...
...after I assured her the Fashion Bomb was all good, she took a photo. How cute is she??
I next sidled up to her husband Mr. Robin Thicke...
...who is super tall and cute in person.
I then said 'Hey' to Aubrey from Danity Kane who admitted to loving Hairspray...
...but said that Danity Kane was 'figuring things out'...
Then couldn't help but stop the beautiful and lovely Stacy Mckenzie (remember her from those Calvin Klein ads)...
...who's still working as a judge for Canada's Next Top Model (also check for her for BET's Fashion meets Movies Show)!
I also met up and coming model Liris Crosse...
...who is currently signed to Wilhemina and has been in several music videos.
It was a fun night!
But we just took one night off...
Stay tuned for more video and Fashion Show Reviews!

PS Had to throw a few patterns in with my Tibi Skirt! Do you like???
Show Review: Miss Sixty
Adriana does Miss Sixty!
Enjoy!
************************************************************************
Miss Sixty’s evening show was an even bigger celebrity crush than Rock & Republic’s, and the dazed looks on people’s faces from the number of flashes going off attested to that (or to the bar in the lobby!). Among the stars in attendance: Rosario Dawson, Jay Alexander, “Gossip Girl”’s Blake Lively, and “Ugly Betty”’s Becki Newton, all of whom dotted the front rows. The tent was packed to the rafters, and by the time I made my way in, there was no hope of a seat. Fortunately, one of the show’s guards was sweet enough to carve out a space for me at the top of the stairs and I ended up having one of the best bird’s-eye views in the house.
Like Rock & Republic, Miss Sixty is a denim label known for its jeans and sexy contemporary wear. Unlike R&R, however, this collection was, unfortunately, not very cohesive or appealing. While there were individual pieces that merited some note, the clothes as a whole were an example of what happens when a label designs too much for the runway and not enough for the consumer, surprising since Miss Sixty is normally a very accessible line.
A seemingly random hodgepodge of influences, from hippie-chic to 80s fads to punk rock (and more), marked the collection, as did stripes, plaids, psychedelic sixties prints, and graphic designs. Denim appeared in the form of vests, genie pants, and rompers, and the outfits were set off in large part by clunky, high-heeled, open-toe boots paired with multicolored, striped knee-high socks (Are you dizzy yet? I know I was—and it wasn’t the flashbulbs this time). There were one or two things you could wear on their own (I thought the colored visors added a playful retro touch, and pair of blue and red-striped tights were fun and made me crave fall weather), but for the most part it was a disappointing show:
But you be the judge F'Bers...

Show Review: Tibi
More from Adriana!
*****************************************************************
Walking into Tibi’s show on Saturday felt a bit like stepping into a tented backyard on a summer evening in the Hamptons: cool white chairs, muted pastel lighting, and a runway of the palest ice blue set the mood for a collection that was as elegant as its atmosphere…
Tibi’s designer and founder Amy Smilovic began in fashion after moving to Hong Kong over ten years ago, and Asia’s influence continues to weave its way into her designs. Viewing their Spring offerings, I was reminded strongly of nineteenth-century colonial Hong Kong: butterfly prints, Chinese reds, and Mandarin dresses dotted the runway, along with jodhpur-like “Officer” trousers and wide, tasseled, waist-cinching belts.
There was also an element of Katharine Hepburn and the 1980s, as well, in the shoulder-padded blouses and boxy blazers (which were reminiscent of early Giorgio Armani). Aside from a few pieces that ran toward the kitschy, I was pleasantly dazzled. The pièce de résistance was a floor-length, jade gown with an appliqué design that was stunning in both its color and fluidity.
The clothes seemed perfect for a worldly, bohemian jetsetter, as at home at a Turkish bazaar as she is on the Vineyard (or her Hamptons backyard). Models Han Jin, Chanel Iman, Tokumbo, and Lakshmi Menon, among others, carried the clothes off beautifully and also added diversity to the runway, continuing a (heartening) trend I’ve been seeing all through Fashion Week.

Fashion Rocks Red Carpet
So Black Fashion Rocks wasn't the only red carpet poppin this past Friday!
Fashion Bomb worthy celebs also stepped out for the annual Fashion Rocks concert at Radio City Music Hall.
My favorites of the night would have to be Ashanti and Ciara...
...who literally sparkled in flattering sequined gowns.
Mary J. Blige and Keyshia Cole looked great...
...though I'm scratching my head at Ms. Cole's inventive pose.
And Leona Lewis and Beyonce kept it cute and simple...
...if not also a tad underdressed (relatively speaking).
While most looked red carpet appropriate, there were some 'misses':
Vivica Fox didn't channel any Glam Gods in her demure, matronly frock, and Lil Mama stepped out in her usual off the wall steeze...
...and it seems Solange is trying to win the 'Fashion Police' Award! Rihanna looks fine, but we've all seen her look much, much better.
What do you think?

Day 2 at the Tents + Tracy Reese Spring 2009 RTW
Hey Fashion Bombers!
So I took a day off on Saturday to avoid the monsoon like weather! Thankfully intern Adriana stepped in (aren't you just loving her show write ups??), and the sun came out on Sunday...
...so I made my way to the tents. I kept it simple yet edgy in a Forever 21 black blouse, J.Crew Skirt, Jenny Dayco earrings, a Miu Miu Matelasse Bag from Bag, Borrow, or Steal, and shoes by Melody Ehsani. What can I say, black and white is always chic, and I like to throw in eye catching accessories to make it all unique.
I dipped into the Tracy Reese show...
..which is always a must see for me during Fashion Week.
Her collection, simply titled "Spring!" was an explosion of floral and nature inspired prints in watercolor pastels of vibrant colors like peach, blue, green, and purple.
Her attention to detail was flawless and unabashedly pretty. I appreciated the little details: buttons of shimmering crystal, delicate frothy organza flowers, gold brocade on classic trenches, leaf appliques, and lots of lots of girly lace.
My favorite looks:
Gorgeous!
I dipped backstage afterwards (as usual) and caught a picture with former Style File subject Brandy:
She looked amazing in a Tracy Reese dress and long lashes. She's super sweet!
Adriana's going to Tibi and Miss Sixty tonight while I work on the first Fashion Week Real Style video. It's gonna be dope!
Stay tuned for more show reviews, video, and pictures from my 2nd Anniversary Party!!!
Intern Post: Rock & Republic Spring 2009 RTW
Check out Adriana's take on the Rock & Republic show.
Fierce!
************************************************************************
It was celebrity pandemonium at Rock & Republic's Saturday night show: Mary-Kate Olsen, Project Runway's Nina Garcia, Bethann Hardison and Damon Dash (both of whom I sat a few rows behind) were just some of the boldface names in attendance. What else can we expect from a label that's made it's name on the culture of music and celebrity?!
Surprisingly, R&R showed some maturity in this collection, which deviated a bit from their usual focus on jeans and edgy casualwear. LOTS of dresses, tuxedo-style tailoring, and (especially) diverse textiles. The contrasts in this collection were not in the colors (the entire collection was done in harsh blacks and whites) but in the fabrics: leather that was so thin it appeared to be tissue paper, petal-like silk ruffles, and an unbelievable Lycra/spandex like acid wash print that was fashioned into denim-like leggings. Also, skinny jeans: still in.
Apart from the label's refreshing new look, the best part of the show was, of course, the music: edgy, pulsing rock blared from the speakers as models, including Chanel Iman, stomped fiercely down the runway in an atmosphere that felt more like a concert than a fashion show. Looking at the pieces, I could easily see several of them on rock style arbiters like Rihanna, Cassie, and Amerie. And kudos to R&R for having one of the most diverse shows in terms of models so far this Fashion Week.
Some of the best looks below:
Rock on, R&R!

Intern Post: Nicole Miller Spring 2009 RTW
Hey!
So while I was out getting ready for my party, intern Adriana took the helm, dipping into a few shows. Here's her take on Nicole Miller!
*************************************************************************
Hey Fashion Bombers!
Friday night in the tents, Nicole Miller showcased her Spring 2009 collection for the fashion masses.
Her designs are best known for their sound tailoring, modern silhouettes, and, most of all, prints. She wasn't lacking for any of these in the collection, which has an edgier, sexier feel. If I had to sum up the collection in one all-encompassing phrase, it would be boyish-meets modern-meets New Age-meets tribal. As multi-layered and interesting as this may make the collection sound, it was also its downfall as it seemed unfocused and sort of all over the place at times.
It was an ambitious collection, though, which is always great to see from an American designer. And when she was on, she was on: there was a to-die-for LBD; a buttery, terracotta colored leather jacket; and an evening gown of a gorgeous, vibrant ethnic pattern (the inspiration for her prints came from a trip she took to Haiti, which us Caribbean girls certainly appreciate). Here are some of my favorite looks:
What do you all think?More soon!

Day 1 at the Tents + Arlenis Pena for Lancome
*Hey!
So it's day one at the tents, and you know the Fashion Bomb is in the building:
Keeping it simple yet saucy, I threw on a Diane von Furstenberg Bolero, Zachary's Smile High Waisted Black Skirt, and Jenny Dayco Jewels. I also decided to dye my hair dark for fall...it's gonna take some getting used to!
Anyway, the BCBG Max Azria show was amazing! It featured Grecian style ruched dresses in flowing fabrics, forgiving enough for any girl from the rail thin to round.
The collection was dominated by gray and beige jumpers and dresses, but pops of blue, hot pink, and green lightened up the mood. Another mood elevator: Spying newcomer Arlenis Pena stomping the catwalk!
I can't wait to see her in more shows!
The rest of the day is pretty chill, though I do plan on stopping into Rubin Singer and Nicole Miller. Then off to my party tonight! If you're in NYC, I hope to see you there!
*Speaking of Ms. Pena, WWD reports today that the Dominican Beauty was recently signed to Lancome...
....Odile Roujoul, president of Lancome says, "Arlenis possesses beauty, intelligence, charm and compassion...we knew she would be a wonderful addition." [WWD]
*Sadness...
...looks like The Fashion Bomb didn't win Best Style and Fashion Blog. The honors went to Afrobella and Scandalous Beauty. Welp. It was great to be nominated?? Hey, and at least they had a Fashion Category this year! Thanks to all who voted!!! Peep the rest of the winners here.
*Pssst, I'm already capturing lots of Real Style:
Stay tuned next week for a full rundown including the next installment of Fashion Bomb TV!
*Check out a preview of Tracy Reese's Spring 2009 RTW collection:
Can't wait for her show on Sunday!
Mail Bombs: Celebrity Looks for Less!!
Hey!
So today is day one of Fashion Week! As we speak, I'm probably taking in my first show of the season: BCBG Max Azria. Stay tuned for deets!
Still, it's Friday, and the show must go on...
...let get started!
First, Jesse says, "I was wondering if you could help me get Rihanna's look in the attached picture..."
"...I usually don't strive to copy celebrity looks, but I couldn't resist this one. Her shirt is the perfect fit and very Jerry McGuire-esque. I like the balance of the outfit- posh but with an "I'm not trying too hard" feel...."
Get Rihanna's steeze for less with the following:
1. Rio Sunglasses, $139. 2. O Oscar Belted Poplin Tunic Shirt, $20. 3. Juicy Couture Leather Chain Hoop Earrings, $58. 4.Steve Madden Madalynn Sandals, $109. 5. Linea Pelle Double Link Chain Belt, $52. 6. AG Jeans Dark Wash Stilt Cigarette Jeans, $87. 7. Kenneth Jay Lane Acetate Animal Print Cuff, $75.
Next, Wright asks, "Where can I find Solange's dress..."
"... or something similar?"
Plaid is the rule for fall, and you can get a Solange like transitional look with the following:
1. Bebe Plaid Belted Western Halter Dress, $119. 2. Adriana Papell Plaid Cap Sleeve Dress, $118. 3. Bebe V Neck Plaid Wrap Dress, $84.
Next, RC says, "I fell in love with this outfit Sanaa Lathan had on...""...Can you please help me find it or something similar?"
It seems Sanaa is balling in this $450 Black Halo Strapless Wool Stretch Jumpsuit:
If that's too much, you can go with this Riller & Fount Kioka Jumpsuit...
...which is a relative steal at $200.
Now I have time for just a couple wardrobe queries!
Kathleen from Blowing Rock, North Carolina says, "I love these Pedro Garcia shoes but at $475 I can not afford them..."
"
