Hot! or Hmm...: Rachel Roy at Tribeca Grand

Sophisticated designer Rachel Roy popped in to the Cinema Society and Entertainment Weekly screening of "The Wrestler" last night at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room:
I'm a sucker for shoe boots and I want to applaud her creativity in refashioning an oversized jacket into a dress. Edginess is always hot, but this look makes me go hmm...
What do you think?

Trend Talk: Marigold

Happy Wednesday!
So as you may know, I love the color yellow!
And while pale yellow is the perfect summer go to--complementing many skin tones and brightening up any look--the winter calls for a richer, deeper shade that I'll call marigold.
The color--a mixture of yellow, gold, and mustard--has been popping up on celebrities of late, whether on the red carpet or out and about.
Let's take a look:
Beauties Vanessa Williams and Rachel Roy both literally light up formal events in strapless deep yellow frocks....

Celeb party girls Nicole Richie...
and Kim Kardashian....
...make the look club ready in thigh skimming, body clinging dresses.
The look can be adapted for work by throwing on a fitted jacket like Vanessa Simmons...
...or winterized with a long wool jacket, a la Meagan Good...
..it's a good look.
Brighten up your winter wardrobe with the following 'Marigold' items:

Trend Talk: Preppy Plaid

Ok, I'll admit it: I'm a prep at heart! Throw me a blazer and cable knit in any combination, and I'll start to swoon.
While 'prep' usually conjures up images of dorky girls in knee socks, modern takes on preppy staples, like plaid, are adding an air of cool to tradition:
Kat de Luna and Eva Pigford rock plaid in colorful dresses topped off with pretty pumps or ankle boots...
...with or without tights.
Rihanna and Rachel Roy pump up the volume in all plaid coats...
...adding belts to create hourglass silhouettes.
Chanteuse Christina Milian offers just a dash of plaid in a yellow cap...
And Kimora (and kids) go super traditional and super cute in Burberry....
Even men get in on the action....
...in blazers, caps, and simple shirts.
Want a plaid look? Try a coat if you're bold...

Fall Fashion Checklist

So,

This weekend the weather suddenly turned from pleasantly warm to uncomfortably chilly... ...and I realized with disdain that it might be about time to get my fall wardrobe started.
While your old faithfuls from last year still work, you should make sure you renew with the following 5 fall essentials:
1. Fitted Blazer: Nothing pulls a look together like a sharp, tailored jacket.
Whether it's in an eye catching color...

Has stylish detail...
...or is a bit more demure...
Popping a blazer over a white shirt or sweater and a pair of jeans is a consummate fall look. The key to a great blazer is fit, so make sure the buttons aren’t puckering over your bust. If you plan on investing, buy something in a neutral color like gray or black, in a seasonless wool.
A few options:

Top Row: Eloise Jacket, $108, www.guess.com, Taffeta Ruffle Collar Jacket, $60, www.bloomingdales.com.
Bottom Row: Wool Herringbone Bella Jacket, $198, www.jcrew.com, Swing-Sleeve Tweed Jacket, $49, www.spiegel.com

2. Next up: Jeans in a Dark Wash.
Whether skinny and straight...

or high waisted....
.. .jeans in a dark rinse are slimming, and will work with anything from a pump to a boot.
Invest in a pair of traditional bootcuts or skinnys...
Seven Jeans Edie Jeans, $175, shopbop.com
And save on the trendy...

Blank High Waisted Jeans, $68, www.urbn.com.
And you're all set!
3. Number three: Boots in a Neutral Color
Whether you rock a heel...
Or something more manageable...
...A cute leather boot adds style while keeping your toes toasty. Boots can be expensive, so expect to drop at least one hundred when you go shopping. Bonus: they'll last for years to come!
My picks:

Top Row: Nine West Jemonia Boot, $189, www.piperlime.com, Frye Sunny Tall Cuff Boot, $298, www.piperlime.com.
Bottom Row: Franco Sarto Tempest Boot, $142, Zappos.com
Metallic-Trim Cuff Boot, $89, www.spiegel.com.
4. Ballet Flats. When those boots start to feel suffocating, you can give your feet a rest in a pair of cute ballet flats....
Kidada Jones is a fan...
They look painfully sophisticated whether paired with footless tights or skinny jeans. If you can only spring for one pair, I'd say go for an animal print or patent leather black:

Top Row: French Sole White Python Ingrid Flats, $78, www.bluefly.com, Shelly's London Electra Ballet Flat, $45, www.urbn.com.
Bottom Row: Tory Burch Reva Ballet Flat, $195, www.bloomingdales.com, Sam Edelman Caroline Flats, $69, http://www.piperlime.com/.
5. Dresses.
The great thing about dresses is that they're the perfect transitional piece from summer to fall. You can wear them alone for warmer temps, or bundle up in tights or a cardigan for more nippy temperatures.
Go for a babydoll...

classic shift....
or a modern wrap...
for added versatility.
My picks:

Top Row: Wool Turtleneck Sweater Dress, $119, www.bebe.com, Abaete Olive Garbardine Marnie Dress, $144, www.bluefly.com.
Bottom Row: Kenneth Cole Reaction Puff Sleeve Sweater Dress, $119, www.macys.com, Semantiks New Haven Plaid Dress, $128, www.nordstrom.com.
You're autumn ready. So sad summer is over...
Smootches!
PS Hmm...so maybe Ms. Naomi C has had a few British Vogue covers...

I'm a bit confused... [dlisted]

Style File: Eve

"I know you seen me this night that night, always my fit tight/Hair done, outfit crazy, skirts fit just right/ Wife beater with a bangin tan/ Walk in demandin all eyes baby here I am..." Eve feat. Alicia Keys, Gangsta Lovin
So for this week's style file, I decided to cover rapper, former Ruff Ryder, and now crash victim and DUI suspect...

Eve!
Yup that’s right. According to TMZ.com she was arrested *this morning* for a DUI! Apparently she crashed her gold Maserati and was then taken in under suspicion of driving under the influence.
Thankfully bad girls are still fly...
She certainly exemplifies femininity with an urban, almost criminal edge...and keeps it sexy whether she's sporting casual or cocktail wear.
For low key non alchoholic nights out, Eve tops skinny jeans and stilettos with everything from t-shirts...

...to fitted jackets...

...in sophisticated grays, blacks, and whites.
While her downtime style is tight, she really shines in red carpet dresses characterized by assymetrical, gathered cuts...

...grecian goddess details...

...and high hem lines...

Hot.
Cop her evening style with the following splurges and steals:

Top Row: Only Hearts Smocked Mini Dress, $152, www.bloomingdales.com; Rachel Roy Asymmetrical Jersey Dress, $640, www.net-a-porter.com.
Bottom Row: Liquid Jersey Dress in Mist, $282, CoutureCandy
Bubble Mini Dress, $130, www.armaniexchange.com.
Now let's hope she beats that case. (Update: TMZ has confirmed that Eve posted bail and was released from Los Angeles County Jail.)
Smootches!
PS On a more positive note, is anyone else really feeling Eve in Kelly Rowland's new song 'Like This'? Haven't heard it? Here's the video:

I love it!
