Spring Trend: Turquoise

Hey!
So the color turquoise has been popping up as of late on many the red carpet whether blessing full on frocks or popping with accessories. The cool color is perfect for warm weather, reflecting the clear sky and flattering most skin tones.
Let's take a look at how some of our favorites rock it:
Selita Ebanks looks stunning yet simple in a cool blue thigh length cocktail...
Serena has a similar look, yet jazzes up her ensemble with an embellished neckline and matching shoes...
Beauty Cassie shimmers in an ice blue frock and adds a belt for emphasis...
Angela Simmons, not a fan of full on blue, just adds a pop with a pair of patent turquoise pumps...
...And Ms. Fox follows suit with simple jewelry...
...worn with a neutral outfit.
Get a turquoise look with the following:

*W Magazine is looking for interns!!

Fashionista reports, "W Magazine needs full time and part time interns for Fall '08. You should be prepared to work 2-5 days a week, for 8 - 12 hours a day. You will be working in the W fashion closet, calling in clothes, helping to pack for fashion shoots, and occasionally assisting on sets. You will be really bored and really stressed unless the only thing you have ever wanted to do is work at a fashion magazine."
So many of you write in asking me how to break into fashion...this is how!

20 Summer Dresses under $100

So last week, New York Times fashion writer Guy Trebay intimated that the dress might be over...
... he quoted Anne Slowey of Elle Magazine who proclaimed, "The eye is looking for something new, and so is the psyche...The dress has been done to death..."
Hmmm, fashion magazines might be a wee bit out of touch because I personally love to throw on a dress virtually any time of year! They're easy, one stop outfits, supremely flirty, colorful, and feminine: basically perfect wardrobe staples and ideal go-to's for spring/summer.
The fashion powers that be may want you to spend money on the 'new' silhouette (pants? ugh!), but here at The Fashion Bomb, we're all about feeding your current obsessions while saving money!
So, just for you frock lovers: 20 summer dresses for $100 or less.
First, one of my favorite silhouettes: strapless dresses...

For busty girls, they offer the option to show some skin, while still wearing supportive undergarments (if you don't know, check out my past post on one of my obsessions, Fantasie's Smoothing Strapless Bra). Throw on a cardigan for the office, then take it off for post work drinks:
Bottom Row: Printed Swiss Dot Alexa Dress, $75, www.jcrew.com; Cindy Dress, $75, www.calypso-celle.com; Abigail Gray and Yellow Dress, $33, www.lulus.com.
Dresses with dainty straps always look cute:
...and are perfect for a picnic or day at the beach:
Top Row: Dallas Dress, $79, www.guess.com; Scarf Print Sundress, $58, www.urbanoutfitters.com; Abbey Dress, $39.50, www.delias.com.
Bottom Row: Single Dress Francesca Spaghetti Stap Dress, $68, www.macys.com; After the Storm Dress, $55, www.modcloth.com; Ameerah Baby Doll Dress, $27.80, www.forever21.com.
Shirtdresses are simple choices for a summer job (interns, listen up!)
...they look crisp, polished, and sophisticated:
Top Row: Shirtdress, $69, www.victoriassecret.com; Rebecca & Drew Swiss Dot Shirtdress, $84, www.neimanmarcus.com.
Bottom Row:Robbie Bee Circles Shirtdress (Plus), $88, www.nordstrom.com; Ben Sherman Shirtdress, $55, www.urbanoutfitters.com.
Lastly, halters:

Real Style: Piedmont Park + Real Talk: Getting Rid of Static Cling

Hey!
So as you know, last weekend, I was chillin in the ATL. My girls and I went out to Piedmont Park...
..and came across this lovely young lady...
...who looked summer ready in a form fitting white shirt dress, gold platform Mary Janes and a colorful bag.
Simply chic!

*Here's a Real Talk quickie.
Last week the weather was beautiful, so I decided to pull out one of my fave silk shirtdresses to bless the day. I steamed it up, threw it on, but was dismayed when this happened:
...that's right! SERIOUS static cling. The men were loving the look...but the cling was so bad it was almost comical (well I thought so)! No amount of tugging could stop the dress from sticking to my legs.
I asked around and one of my coworkers recommended rubbing a dryer sheet on the inside of my dress and on my legs. Voila le resultat:
...problem solved!
My colleague also told me that hairspray sprayed on the legs can work as well.
You might've already known this trick, but I was clueless!
A dryer sheet totally saved my day:)

*It's confirmed! The Independent reports that Vogue Italia's July issue will contain almost exclusively black models!

Mail Bombs!

Happy Friday!
So you might notice something a little different...
The weather has been so amazing, I figured I'd switch colors to keep things fresh and reflect the warm season. Whaddya think?
Hopefully the new vibrancy won't distract too much from the business at hand...
Let's get started!
Kim from Orlando wrote in saying, "I was searching the web when I came across Cassie in this outfit..."
"...I fell in love!!!! I have to know where I can get this outfit or something similar."
Hey! I couldn't find Cassie's exact steeze, but you can definitely get her look! Start with the following tops:
Left to Right: Pinko Top, $169, www.yoox.com; Roberto Cavalli Underwear Tank Top, $188, www.yoox.com; Dolce & Gabbana Top, $419, www.yoox.com.
Then throw these relatively affordable pencil skirts in the mix to complete the 'fit:
Left to Right: Italian Glamour Satin Pencil Skirt, $98, www.bebe.com; Victoria Beckham Seam Detail Satin Pencil Skirt, $61.63, www.asos.com.
Next reader Darien says, "My graduation is coming up on May 9th so this Mail Bomb is definitely overdue! I wanted a simple sheath dress in a light color that will accentuate my curves but still be appropriate for a graduation. I fell in love with this dress that Mel B wore recently in Beverly Hills..."
"... If you could help me find it or something similar I would be eternally grateful."
White sheaths aren't hard to come by! Try these stunners for a spicy look:
Left to Right: Donna Rico Satin & Jacquard Sheath, $148, www.nordstrom.com; Magaschoni Collection Square Neck Sheath Dress, $320, www.saks.com; Members Only Scoop Neck Racer Back Dress, $330, www.revolveclothing.com.
Next Giselle says, "I wanted to know who designed the earrings..."
"... that Eva is wearing in this picture?"
According to this site, (thanks Jamie!) Eva is wearing a pair of earrings by designer Jenny Dayco (www.jennydayco.com). I couldn't find the pair to purchase online...if you want something that comes close, you can go with this $10 pair of Casablanca Chandelier Earrings...
...from www.fredflare.com. Can't go wrong for $10! They're cheap as chips as intern Natalie would say:)
Now for a few wardrobe queries!
Jamila from Birmingham, Alabama says, "I have a dilemma. I am attending the annual mother and daughter banquet that is sponsored by our church. My mother, sister, and I always sync colors for the occasion and this year we chose chocolate brown and turquoise. While my mother and sister have already found their outfits and can't seem to have the same luck. So, I need help finding something semi-formal that is brown or turquoise or both and also "church appropriate". I am a college student and I have a very strict budget."
You might have to spend a little, but these frocks fit your criteria:
Left to Right: Nicole Miller Printed Double V-Neck Dress, $200, www.bluefly.com; T-Bags Belted Floral Dress, $148, www.neimanmarcus.com; Carmen Marc Valco Halter Dress, $355, www.neimanmarcus.com.
Nique says, "I was wondering if you could help me find some great affordable shoes to complement this dress from French Connection..."

Cute Dress! Since your outfit has a lot going on with the bright color and embellishments, I 'd say go for very simple sandals. Silver shoes would match the beads, and bonus: you can wear metallic shoes with just about anything!
Try these:
Top Row: Mystique Silver Strappy Sandals, $125, www.shopkitson.com; Chinese Laundry Wesley Silver Sandal, $50, www.zappos.com; Synapse Silver Leather, $70, www.stevemadden.com.
Bottom Row: Stuart Weitzman Tataliz Sandals, $70, www.bluefly.com; Leather Buckle Flat Sandal, $48.42, www.asos.com; T-Strap Sandals with Twisted Thong Detail, $108, www.anntaylor.com.
Lastly, Stephanie from NYC says, "I'm looking for a watch for my man's birthday and I have no idea what to get since my preliminary searches came up with ones that were $1,000+. I'd like a quality piece he can wear out for most occasions and I'm partial to square faces but I'm flexible. Any suggestions?"
I found a lot of low priced, square faced options. Try these on your man:
Top Row: Diesel Three Hand Watch, $140, www.nordstrom.com; Fossil's Men's Square Case Bracelet, $125, www.macys.com; Invested 2Tone Watch, $125, www.guess.com.
Bottom Row: Men's Timex Chrono Square Face Watch, $90, www.target.com; Burberry Men's Square Dial Watch, $325, www.nordstrom.com; Dare to be Square, $105, www.kennethcole.com.

Funny, one of my first Mail Bombs dealt with the subject of cute watches for women. To reminisce on the old days, click here.

Style Moratorium: Alexis Phifer

Happy Wednesday!
So when Bossip reported that Alexis Phifer and Kanye were officially over, a part of my fashion heart died.
Sure, their breakup signaled the end of a great duo, but I was more impacted by the death of Hollywood's best dressed couple. C'mon, who rocked it better than those two???
Kanye is clearly a style czar, and Alexis pulled her weight as well is amazingly flattering 'fits. Let's take a look:
Alexis favored head to toe black for everything from red carpet events to Parisian Fashion shows...
...opting for a one shoulder look on occasion...
...worn with exotic skinned clutches and matching stilettos.
When she varied it up, she kept it safe and sophisticated by pairing black with red....
...or black and white...
..providing just a pop on rare occasions whether in outfits of full on color...
...or eye catching jewelry....
...worn with neutral jumpsuits and boots.
Sharp!
Want her look?
Get Alexis' dress game with the following:
Left to Right: Larsen Gray Bouquet Ruffle Sash Dress, $229, shopbop.com
Abaete Black Gabardine Uptown Shift Dress, $150, www.bluefly.com.

For get her accessories steeze, go with these:

Real Style: Chelsea

Hey!
I'm still in GA today, jumping on a Northbound flight this afternoon.
I actually caught some ATL Real Style in Piedmont Park (holla!), but like a dum dum forgot my camera cord (along with everything else it seems) in NYC. So, I give you a bit of Real Style I snapped while walking around Chelsea a few weeks ago:

...this young self professed model who only admitted to working 'around the city' seemed perfect for Real Style because of her rocker chick steeze.
Her outfit triumphed because of her accessories--skull cap, colorful scarf, pink graffiti inspired bag, and subtle jewelry. Her gold jacket, while neutral, is also a nice bold touch, balanced out by black skinny jeans and flat ankle boots.
Snaps!

Mail Bombs!

Hey!
So I'm home in Atlanta, typing away. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining--life is good! I've gotta run enjoy the day, but first I figured I'd solve a few mail bombs...
...just a few.
Reader Elkie wrote in a while ago loving the earrings Kelis wore for the Grammy awards...
She says, " I covet them and MUST HAVE THEM!!! Can you PLEASE help identify where I can purchase these FABULOUS earrings? This is a fashion CODE RED!"
Thankfully London intern Natalie stepped in! She says, "Design-wise, a very close match I found on asos.com were these Cut out Detail Circle Drop Earrings..."
"...They're cheap as chips for $13.21, and I trust you'll rock 'em right..." Cheap as chips! I love that!
Pamela wrote in about Janet Jackson's cute sunglasses...
She says, "Where can I find those sunglasses or somthing similar?"
Square, oversized frames like Janet's can be found at any price point:
Left to Right: Script Logo Sunglasses, $39.50, www.gbyguess.com; Marc by Marc Jacobs Oversized Square Sunglasses, $115, http://www.nordstrom.com/; Oliver People's Bacall Sunglasses, $285, www.net-a-porter.com.
Next Errin from Atlanta says, "So I'm trying to make the most of my long-legged life by getting a jump on my summer jumpsuit game. I just KNOW that if anyone can help me out on this, it's The Fashion Bomb. Here's my inspiration, from Preen's S/S 08 line..."
"...Suggestions? I've only got two months 'til the first day of summer!"
I did a search and found this Twill Linen Puff Sleeved Jumpsuit from bebe.com...
...for only $119, you can flaunt those long legs all summer long!

Reader Posh was also feeling the jumpsuit look, and wanted to know how to get Mena Suvari's strapless suit:
She says, "Do you know who this is by? Or can you find something similiar??"
You can give off a similar essence with these; throw on a belt to complete the look:
Left to Right: Andrea S. Meadow jumpsuit, $303, http://www.revolveclothing.com/; Sea Pleated Front Strapless Jumpsuit, $393, http://www.revolveclothing.com/.
Now for a wardrobe query.
Mona wrote in looking for two very specific items. She says, "I've been looking for a Maxi Dress and Light Denim Skinny Jeans in a size 12 for the past month and come up with nothing! Can you help?"
Sure. For your Maxi Dress, here are a few options:
Left to Right: Crochet Trim Maxi Dress, $109, http://www.victoriassecret.com/; Diane von Furstenberg Washed Silk Strapless Dress, $398, http://www.bloomingdales.com/; Kate Moss Sleeveless Cowl Front Dress, $77, http://www.asos.com/.

Fashion Bomb Meet & Greet!!!

Hello Lovelies!!
I am SO tired from yesterday and am running to catch a plane, but wanted to give y'all the scoop on last night's event.
Well, what can I say? It was, in a word: FABULOUS!
Though I arrived fashionably late (and we had to leave a bit early), I had a great time meeting, mingling, shopping, and sipping with my New York Fashion Bomb contingent.
A few pictures of the scene at Te Casan:
I got my buddy and professional photographer Casey Noel (www.cnoelphotoandtravel.com) to handle all the pictures. He caught amazing portraits, much better than my handy dandy Canon!  Take a look at some of the fabulous, chic peeps who rolled through:
Beautiful!
Of course I couldn't help but jump in and snap a few pix myself:
Yours truly with Latisha Daring of Pieces Boutique (www.piecesofbklyn.com), my absolute favorite place to shop in Brooklyn! I got my dress and jewels from Pieces, flats from Te Casan.  You like?
Designer Malcolm Harris (www.malsirrah.com) came thru as well along with his partner Tyson of www.unvogue.com...
Shout out to my cousin Kofi! He's an aspiring model. Check him out at www.myspace.com/ny8store.
And I had to put my friends to work modeling the new Fashion Bomb t-shirts:
They're hot! Pick one up today!!!
With that said, it was a great time. I had a lot of fun.

I want to say THANK YOU to my sponsors: Latisha and Colin from Pieces Boutique (www.piecesofbklyn.com), Bryce at Intencity PR for the Elizabeth Grant (www.elizabethgrant.com) and Lifebooker.com products, Claude from Trace Magazine (www.trace212.com), and Garnell from Halcyon Jets (www.halcyonjets.com)!
Also THANK YOU to Maureen from Step Petal Media for coordinating everything, and thanks to the wonderful people at Te Casan (www.tecasan.com) for hosting me, selling fabulous, amazing shoes, and for all your help last night. Special shouts to Marco and Darien!
Last, but not least: a super huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out--my dear dear amazing splendiforous friends (I can't name you all), readers (same), and my guy friends who might not always be the target readers for the Fashion Bomb, but rolled out nonetheless.
I heart you all, it was amazing time, and it won't be the last!
Time to switch out of my Cinderella costume, and put back on my nerd glasses:)
Ummm...if you want me, you can find me in the A!

Trend Talk: Ombre

Hey Guys,
So I'll be honest: I'm pretty crazed preparing for the Meet & Greet tonight! I can't wait to 'say hey' to all my tri-city Fashion Bombers! Did I mention I'm also flying home to ATL for my lil sister's bday tomorrow? Yeah...so with that said, I'll keep this super short--lots to do!

Ombre items--frocks, bags, and shoes that go from a darker color gradient to light--have been popping up on several celebrities of note. The bold design--done the right way--can look very chic and fashion forward, while maintaining an essential element of fun.
Mary J. Blige looks divine in a floor length ombre gown...
...whose variable brown and tan shades play up her platinum hair.
Beauty Thandie Newton looks like she's dip dyed in hot pink...
...in a dress that goes from bright to white then black in a snap.
Tia Mowry opts for a more subtle color palette...
...with black fading into stylish steel gray.
And J. Lo adopts the trend, but keeps it safe...
...carrying a bag in lieu of a full on ombre outfit.
To get the look, go with the following dresses:
Left to Right: Jay Godfrey Ombre Tank Dress, $495, www.saks.com; Single Silk Ombre Dress, $290, www.neimanmarcus.com; Ombre Dip Dye Dress, $84, www.asos.com.
For just a splash, slip on these shoes...
Left to Right: AK Anne Klein Women's Ombre Pump, $89, www.endless.com; Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, $384, www.shopbop.com; Darby Ombre Peep-Toe Pumps, $25, www.target.com.
For ombre bliss, these bags will do the trick:
Left to Right: Shadow Large Frame Bag, $115, www.guess.com; Oasis Padlock and Fob Bag, $77, www.asos.com.
That does it. See some of y'all tonight!
Smootches!
Fashion, News, and What Nots
*To Review, deets for tonight's fiesta:
What: Fashion Bomb Meet & Greet
Where: Te Casan, 382 West Broadway between Broome and Spring.
When: 6 -9pm
Why: Because I love you. No seriously.
See ya there!

...stepped out for the Vogue launch of GAP designer editions in this lovely buttery frock.
The dress's soft color complements her skin tone, and her tiny metallic clutch and green shoes are eye catching yet subtle--the perfect look for a spring wedding or first date.
Though it seems she's wearing this $595 3.1 Phillip Lim Strapless...
You can get her entire look for less with the following:
Left to Right: Erin Checkbook Clutch, $29.80, www.gbyguess.com; Plenty by Tracy Reese Strapless Silk Hannah Dress, $230, www.bloomingdales.com; Nine West Women's Solelyn Sandal, $80, www.endless.com.

Real Style: Mass Appeal

Hey!
So last week my homeboy tipped me off to a party thrown by Mass Appeal (www.massappealmag.com), an urban, streetwear magazine straight outta NYC. The night promised performances by underground rappers K.i.D. CuDi and Killer Mik...not one to shy away from cool events, I dropped in...
The venue was packed with what I'll dub the 'hip-hop underground' set. And while I honestly was just looking to chill, the style sleuth in me couldn't help but snap a couple pictures:

These young men looked retro cool in a kelly green cardigan on the left and colorful t-shirt on the right. You may not be able to see but the t-shirt sporting young man has golds on the bottom. Another shot:

...a splash of ghetto with more fabulous sunglasses. Another note: Glasses--whether prescription or made for the sun--seemed to the one ubiquitous accessory noone....
...left home without.  I stopped these two because of their quirky steeze. B-boy on the left brings the eighties back in a v-neck t, leather jacket and dookie chain, while homegirl embraces nerd chic in large librarian glasses offset by a trendy striped top, hoodie, and skirt with tights.
So what do you think?
Does Mass Appeal have Real Style?

Mail Bombs

Hey!
It's Friday! Yippee! And it seems the weather is finally improving. I'm gonna go out and try to catch some sun...
Let's not delay.
First reader Fatema loved Rihanna's look recently...
She says, "I was hoping you could help me locate her hooded dress or something similar."
Rihanna's wearing this Long Terry Jacket from Armani Exchange...
...and lucky you, it's on sale for $59! Hurry up and buy!
Nina wrote in gushing over Meagan Good's look...
...she says, "Do you know where I can get the same Nike top?"
You'll have to use a bit of ingenuity. It looks like Meagan got busy with a pair of scissors on vintage Nike tops like these...

Nike Cropped Tee, $42, www.urbn.com; Nike Blazing Bundle Tee, $25, www.nike.com.
To get an off the shoulders look, you'll have to cut out the neckline. Good luck!

Dawn from Michigan was feeling Christine Tegan (John Legend's boo's) look... She says, "My birthday's coming up and I need something similar!"
I felt that this BCBG Silk Organza Strapless Dress came close...

...get it for $360 at www.macys.com.
Next a reader who calls herself "Mamita es Buena" e-mailed me the following request:
"I'M LOVING THIS CALVIN KLEIN BLACK SATIN JUMPSUIT, BUT SINCE IT WAS BACK IN 2005, I KNOW MY CHANCES OF FINDING THEM ARE SLIM TO NONE ..."
"I WAS WONDERING IF YOU KNEW OF ANYTHING SIMILAR LOOKING OUT THERE ... THANK YOU :-)"
Alright, well I did a quick search and found this Orthodox Christine Jumper...
...get it for $244 at www.revolveclothing.com.
Now for just a few wardrobe queries:
Reader Alisha says, "I am a plus sized diva going to the Bahamas this summer. I was wondering if you could help me with some fun looks for my days in the sun."
No problem!
Go with the following to get started:
Top Row: Jones New York Signature Woman Zebra Print Tunic, $75, www.macys.com; Marilyn Convertible Dress, $195, www.monifc.com; Black and White Geo Print Halter Swim Top, $48, www.torrid.com.
Bottom Row: Merona Swim Dress, $40, www.target.com; Maiya Salon Z Cybil Silk Dress, $440, www.saks.com; Black Yellow and Purple Floral Smocked Tube Dress, $68, www.torrid.com.
There are plenty of plus sized websites out there carrying very cute clothes, perfect for the Bahamian weather. For pointers, check out my Archived Posts on Plus Sized Items.
Lastly Erin says, "I recently landed my dream internship of interning for my congressman in Washington DC this summer(!!!!!) and have no idea what to wear. I'm not sure, but I know I am on a budget. Can you help me?"
Of course! And congrats!
On Capitol Hill conservative is the rule, so go for pieces in muted colors. Buy a few sheath dresses, and a skirt and pantsuit...mix and match the rest with inexpensive tops:
Top Row: Belted Sheath Dress, $79, www.anntaylorloft.com; Calvin Klein Classic Crepe Suit, $224, www.macys.com; Ben Sherman Dunnaway Dress, $100, www.urbn.com.
Bottom Row: Poplin Ruffle Blouse, $58, www.ardenb.com; Belted Pencil Skirt, $20, www.forever21.com; Bella Polka Dot Blouse, $32, www.fredflare.com.
For more tips on what to wear in work situations, check out my Work Wardrobe Posts.
Think that does it.

Style File: Liya Kebede

Happy Thursday!
So for this week's Style File, I decided to feature model extraordinaire...
...Liya Kebede.
Hailing from Ethiopia, this stunning 28 year old has quietly commanded the attention of the fashion world since her first Gucci show for Tom Ford in 2000.
When she's not stomping the runway for bold faced names like Diane Von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein....
You can catch her dominating national ad campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, Louis Vuitton, Estee Lauder, Tiffany & Co, and Lord & Taylor...

...and gracing the covers and spreads of the world's hottest magazines...

Off the job she still manages to pull off a chic style, favoring dresses in neutral black or white...
Frothy fabrics of plum, peach, or an eye catching metallic...
...with the occasional print thrown in, just for good measure....
She keeps it super simple when casual, opting for blazers of leather or wool over a fitted top with pants...
Stunningly chic!
To get a Liya dress look go for the following:
Top Row: Diane Von Furstenberg Black Silk Gold Burnout Dress, $219, www.bluefly.com; Laila Azhar Tulip Dress, $149, shopbop.com
Bottom Row: Marc by Marc Jacobs Striped Dress, $244, www.neimanmarcus.com; Milly Tab Jumper, $135, www.tobi.com.
For her casual steeze, go with these:
Left to Right: Maria Bonita Extra Jacket, $259, www.tobi.com; Striped Knit Top, $29, www.rampage.com; Julia High Waisted Capris, $79, www.guess.com.
Alright!
Now, for the contest winner!
The third place T will be by Jaja, who has captured all of your hearts and minds with her provocative, eye-catching design. As a prize, Jaja will get the following looks from a new streetwear brand, Naketano (www.naketano.de)...
...a line of cute, colorful cotton dresses, sweatshirts, and tops from Germany. I personally love the sweatshirts, and might cop one in a sec. Though prices are in Euros, I found out they do ship to the US.
Congrats Jaja!
As for you guys, t-shirts are moving at a surprisingly SLOW pace, so I'm giving some of you local girls an extra incentive: The next 5 orders placed will get $20 off a spa treatment anywhere in NYC care of www.lifebooker.com! Yay!
Get your shop on at www.fashionisthebomb.com.
A small sacrifice for urban fashion!

*See more of Liya's work at www.liyakebede.com. She's the bomb.
*Did anyone else catch Puffy's "If I Were King" nonsense on MTV last night??
I sat through it for about...half an hour before I got tired of him screaming for "more leathers" and "more colors" while his real designers trudged around the world to actually design the clothes. By 10:32 I had flipped to Judge Judy, though my buddy texted me saying that he made some great statements about the lack of ethnic models in fashion. Anyone care to share?

Spring Must Have: Leather Jacket

Hey!

So I don't know how the weather is in your neck of the woods, but it's certainly a hair above chilly here in NYC!
I've been trying, futilely, to wear my trench coat, but this brisk weather calls for something a little more hefty even though it's officially spring.
A great in between outerwear piece is a leather jacket: it's light enough to peel off if the sun peeks out, yet warm enough for morning chills. Bonus: you can take it out again for transitional weather in the fall.
Celebs already know the deal:
Newlywed Beyonce wears a traditional black leather jacket out with her hubby...
Erykah Badu and Keyshia Cole also go for black, but spice it up with quilted panels...
And Alicia Keys and Rihanna punch up the style in tobacco and red leather options...
...with stunning results.
Guys almost exclusively rock the leather look when out and about:
Best man Jay-Z also goes for black, but with a twist...
John Legend and Andre Benjamin favor brown jackets with aviator elements...
And of course style czar Kanye West pops on a jacket that strikes a balance...
...in neutral grey with an edgy silhouette. Alexis looks pleased!
Want a leather look?
Ladies, try these high and low priced options:
And guys, no worries, I've got you covered:

Real Style: Maryland + Murakami

Hey My Damies!
So believe it or not it took me all weekend to recover from the excitement of the Murakami Gala opening! It was absolutely amazing to meet and mingle with the fashionable set right in my backyard. I was *thrilled*. I didn't get much time to go out and capture Real Style, but you guys always come through! Today, check out Shariba from Silver Spring, Maryland...
She says, "Here's an example of my personal style. Please tell me what you think honestly!!"
I love the shirtdress mixed with your designer clutch, and your bold white boots are quite the chic choice. The dark sunglasses only amplify your outfit.
Two snaps!
What do y'all think?

Fashion, News, and What Nots
*A lot of you were like, "Claire how was the rest of the Murakami event? Did you go to the exhibit?" Yes, of course, aside from chatting with Marc Jacobs, I took a twirl around the exhibit itself!
The night started off with a press junket, and the backyard of the museum was set to look like typical Chinatown street stalls selling fake Louis V bags...
...while the bags were made to look fake, everyone working there insisted they were real. Honestly, at first glance, I couldn't tell the difference! As we've discussed, I'm no stranger to China, Chinatown, or fakes (though I've reformed!), but when I first took a look around, I said to myself, "If you can get a great looking fake, why shell out the dough???" Chairman and chief executive of Louis Vutton Yves Carcelle spoke a bit about the display...
...he talked about the importance of protecting intellectual property. To be honest, I sympathize. Once you're in the creative realm and start working hard to maintain a product, it really sucks when someone comes around and straight up steals your work, words, or designs. Can you imagine if someone launched a site called "The Fashion Explosion" and basically did the same thing I did?!? Or reproduced my posts (it's happened before).  It's infuriating! But then again, if I were loony enough to charge y'all $1,000 to log on, wouldn't I be asking to get 'knocked off?'
The debate rages on.
Moving to the exhibit...
...it's pretty dope.  Not sure if you know this, but Murakami designed Kanye West's album cover...
..and a lot of his artistry reflects the same kind of space age, cartoon feel, but with a funny edge:
...lots of emphasis on eyes, mushrooms, and flowers, all painted in almost psychadelic pastel colors. It's grown up art for the kids at heart.
A must see! Check out more pictures (including my dress!) on the Fashion Bomb's Facebook group. And join if ya haven't already! If you have extra click time, also become a fan of the Fashion Bomb's less maintained facebook fansite:)
*Reminisce on my post about fake bags. Hilarity indeed!
*Yo, Guy Trebay of the New York Times was also in the house...

Mail Bombs!!!

Um, last night was action packed. So packed, in fact, that I'll have to cut Mail Bombs short and tell y'all about my BOMB night. First, however, is Friday Mail...

...Let's do it to it!
First up, reader Britt says, "I love this dress, but I’m short..."
"...Could you help me find a dress similar to this in a shorter style??"
I did a quick search and felt this $471 Fendi Pleat Front Mini Dress could fit the bill...
...the color and length are on point. I think you could work it if you just pull the straps down a bit. Get this Kebede worthy runway look at www.net-a-porter.com.
Next, reader Bee says, "I was wondering if you could help me get the same look as Naomi in the new Pinko ad..."
"I love the look, and shape of the dress. I don't necessarily want the same colours...Thanks."
Hey! I stumbled up on this Boudoir Strapless Fringe Dress...
... I think it works! Get it for $230 at www.blaec.com.
Lea from Atlanta says, "Ananda Lewis wore this fantastic, white cotton, lace-up front tunic with sequins on the Keyshia Cole Reunion Show..."
".. .This top is perfect for my upcoming 10-day trip to the Caribbean. Can you please help me find this?"
Ananda’s exact top was hard to find, but I felt this Tory Burch Stone Embellished Tunic came close......it’s cute but quite the splurge at $470. Get it at www.revolveclothing.com.
Next, a reader who calls herself Simply Me fell in love with Kelis' vest pictured here:
She says, "I wanted to know where I could find this top or something similar. Since I'm young I also wanted to know what I could wear with it to fit my age."
Wow, Fashion Bomb Friend Kesh parties with Kelis? Cool! Anyway, since Kelis is wearing a wool vest ( a winter item), it's hard to find the exact product amongst spring's offerings. I did, however find this very age appropriate $20 sweater vest at Delias.com...
For a young person like yourself, I’d say you can wear it with a pair of skinny jeans and boots. If you want to sauce it up (as I once did back in the day), you can wear it with a black skirt with or without tights.
That does it!

Claire's Life: Murakami Exhibit

So last night I made my way to the Murakami opening gala at the Brooklyn Museum. I live *really* close to the venue, so basically there's no way it was going to happen without yours truly in the house....
It was a pretty cool event, full to the brim with Francophiles and the requisite Japanese socialites. I had to snippy snap a few pix:
Marc Jacobs loves the Fashion Bomb...
So does Kanye (who performed!)....he was the sweetest man, even though this picture makes him look sad...
And I had to take a picture with man of the hour, Takashi Murakami. We know of him for his rainbow colored Louis Vuitton bags, but he's so much more than that. I hope all of you check out his exhibit in my backyard, the Brooklyn Museum. He's so so so dope.
Um. That does it!
I'm gonna rest up for the weekend:) I'm a mess.
Smootches!

Breaking into Fashion: Joresa Blount

Hey!
So today, I bring you guys yet another 'Breaking into Fashion' post!
A few weeks ago, reader Kori wrote in saying, "Can you elaborate more on finding out about Fashion Event Planning or Promotions?"
Immediately, I thought of my good friend, Joresa Blount:
...a UNC graduate who does event planning and management for Tribeca Grand and Soho Grand Hotels in NYC...
Working behind the scenes in a pair of fresh to death sky high stilettos, Joresa speaks to clients, draws floorplans, schedules staff, buys supplies, and sets up spaces for events ranging from movie premieres studded with stars like Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Marc Jacobs to screenings of the finales of Project Runway.
She took a quick moment out of her busy schedule to tell all your aspiring event planners how to break into the system.
She says, " I became involved in event planning/management when I took an internship at the Soho/Tribeca Grand Hotels. You need hands on experience to get a job in this industry, so an internship is key...."
Agness Deyn at Tribeca Grand Event
On a day to day basis, Joresa juggles quite a bit. "For fashion events, I have to deal with florists, lighting, sound, and event producers who help you come up with a concept and execute. It's a huge production for something that can last about 20 minutes. That means the pressure is up for everything to be perfect!"
Rachel Roy, Damon Dash, Madonna, and Guy Ritchie at screening at Tribeca Grand
While partying with Marc Jacobs is cool, she admits, "The hours vary week to week, and can be extremely long." Still, she says, "I get instant satisfaction from a job well done. It's nice to know when your guest has had an amazing time because their event was flawless." She adds, "Plus the gift bags are always great!"
Zoe Kravitz at recent Tribeca Grand Event
To be an event planner, you must be, " detail oriented, a good listener, and someone who can make quick, sound decisions under pressure. Creativity doesn't hurt!"
Also, "Make sure you look fabulous. It's definitely an industry where looks are important!" she says, "Yes, it gets hard to run around in 4" heels, but you got to do it. This is what makes things look glamorous!"
Alright! Any future event planners in the house?

Trend Talk: Stripes

Hey!
So striped garments have been around since the first French sailor donned a navy blue and white combo on the seas of the Riviera. The nautical look is still de rigeur these days, popping up in multicolored variations on some of our favorite celebrities:
Keyshia Cole looks patriotic in a red, white, and blue striped top with jeans...
Amerie goes sassy in a green striped summer ready dress....
Pre baby J.Lo shines in a chevron striped trapeze dress worn with boots...
And around the way girl Mary J goes traditional with a horizontal striped turtleneck with jeans and fur trimmed boots...
While you can't go wrong in most occasions, I'd advise against wearing striped tops and bottoms together...
...though with enough pinache, you can pull anything off!
Gain your stripes with the following tops:
Top Row: Sailor Sweater, $18, www.laredoute.com; Wesc Pia Drawstring T, $95, www.urbn.com.
Bottom Row: Tommy Hilfiger Striped Crewneck Sweater, $54.50, www.macys.com; Butterfly Tee in Pearl, $79, CoutureCandy
Go flirty in these affordable dresses:

If you're a bit more tame, go with these accessories...
Top Row: Metallic Stripe Scarf, $9, www.forever21.com; LAMB Trenchtown Manchester Clutch, $395, www.nordstrom.com.
Bottom Row: Carlos by Carlos Santana Casino Pump, $99, www.macys.com; Million of Smiles Striped Scarf, $125, shopbop.com

Get Their Look: Danity Kane

Hey!
So Danity Kane has been blowing up lately with their album release and the finale of 'Making the Band.' With tons of recent group appearances, I figured....what better time to take a look at their style?
The girls go for seasonal orange and cream cocktails for their album release party in Las Vegas...
...then worked the short hems yet again in rainbow colored dresses of frothy pink, yellow, black and coral for their NYC album release...
...they shine in all white for a TRL appearance....
...and stick with the monochromatic look with S&M inspired black gear for another appearance at TRL...
While most occasions call for a club appropriate look, these girls can mix it up, opting for more casual duds of leather jackets, floral print tops, denim, and track jackets for a signing at Best Buy...
Hot!
A mixture of saucy and sultry, the girls are apt style ambassadors. They're on point with all the trends for our set: short shorts, skinny jeans, stilettos, and alluring thigh skimming dresses.
Want their look?
Get an Orange Crush Danity Kane Essence with the following:
Get Super Saucy in these all black beauts:

*So I'll admit, I'm a huge fan of Danity Kane! My favorite songs are 'Hold me Down,' 'One Shot,' and 'Take it Further.'
Their new song, 'Damaged'....

*Do y'all remember Diddy's first girl group, Dream? I liked them too (Their song "This is Me (Remix)" is still on my ipod). Wonder whatever happened to them....maybe they could've used a reality show???
A blast from the past, just for fun:

Seems they have a Donnie look a like rapping. I smell a formula!
Oh, and anyone else confused why Diddy is all up in the video...dancing in the video...rapping in the video? Guess that was a long time ago.
